在生命中操练忍耐

如果说以1至100来测量你的耐心,那么,你会为自己打多少的分数呢?你会视自己为有耐心的人,还是缺乏耐心的人呢?

在我们还未决定以前,让我们先一起探讨耐心的定义。根据牛津字典,耐心指的是‘在没有觉得任何烦恼或焦虑之前,接纳或容忍延迟、问题或是苦难的能力。’

所以,又有多少人会认为自己是有耐心的人呢?当我们一坐进车子里时,我们的耐心就开始受到考验。如果你遇见一辆驾驶缓慢的车辆在你的前面,害你错过了绿灯,你还会有耐心吗?又或是之前两趟的电梯都载满了人,而你被迫要等下一趟的电梯,你还会有耐心吗?

当我们身处不方便和不舒适的处境时,就在这些时候我们的耐心往往受到考验。当我们面对如此的处境时,我们还会选择以爱相待,耐心等候吗?还是我们以愤怒、沮丧和埋怨来面对这些处境呢?但是,不抱怨也不表示有耐心。事实上,一个不抱怨的人是非常杰出的,甚至使徒保罗都将他/她比喻成天上闪烁的星星(腓立比书 2:14-16)!

 

无论作什么,都不要发怨言、起争论,好使你们无可指摘、纯真无邪,在这弯曲背谬的世代中,作神没有瑕疵的儿女;你们要在这世代中发光,好像天上的光体一样,把生命的道显扬出来(腓立比书 2:14-16)

相信我们对现世代中的埋怨文化并不会感到陌生。不在苦难中抱怨,能显出一个人的品格。事实上,那些有耐心者拥有极大的理解能力;反而那些脾气暴躁者显出愚昧(箴言14:29)。更重要的是,在苦难中忍耐能为我们塑造好的品格,更能为我们的生命带来盼望(罗马书 5:3-4)。难怪连圣经里都称赞那些有忍耐的人!爱的真谛也始于忍耐(哥林多前书 13:4-7),而圣灵的果子中也包含了忍耐(加拉太书 5:22)。

 

不但这样,我们更以患难为荣;知道患难产生忍耐,忍耐产生毅力,毅力产生盼望; (罗马书 5:3-4)

所以,我们该如何学习并操练忍耐呢? 让我们看看提摩太后书2章22节告诉我们些什么吧!

 

你应当逃避年轻人的私欲,要和那些以清洁的心求告主的人,一同追求公义、信心、爱心、和平(提摩太后书 2:22)

 

这节经文告诉我们操练忍耐的步骤,那就是逃避罪恶,追求公义。也就是说,我们应当选择抛弃旧有的生活方式,追求新的生活方式。若我们想要塑造新的态度,那么,我们必须如此行。

所以,在追求忍耐这事上,我们不单只要将愤怒、沮丧、怨恨以及自私抛之脑后或是逃避;我们更要追求操练慷慨、饶恕、自律、信心、爱及和平。唯有这样,我们才能在我们生命中塑造忍耐的态度。

 

但现在你们要除去愤怒、恼怒、恶毒、毁谤、以及粗言秽语这一切事。不要彼此说谎,因为你已经脱去了旧人和旧人的行为,穿上了新人。这新人照着他的创造者的形象渐渐更新,能够充分认识主。(歌罗西书 3:8-10)

希伯来书12章1至2节也同样告诉我们,我们蒙召就是要脱离所有的罪恶,追求基督!换句话说,离开我们旧有的方式,追求新的方式。

 

所以,我们既然有这么多的见证人,像云彩围绕着我们,就应该脱下各样的拖累,和容易缠住我们的罪,以坚忍的心奔跑那摆在我们面前的赛程;专一注视耶稣,就是我们信心的创始者和完成者。(希伯来书 12:1-2)

操练耐心是一个过程,并不是一朝一夕的事情。如果你觉得自己正在努力操练中,千万别放弃!神所看见的是更大的画面,祂也对你我的成长有着相当大的耐性(彼得后书 3:9)。

 

主决不耽延他的应许,像有些人以为他是耽延的一样;其实他是宽容你们,不愿有一人灭亡,却愿人人都悔改。(彼得后书 3:9)

 

除了塑造我们的品格之外,耐心也体现了我们对神的信心,相信祂在掌权、祂是无所不能的神、祂是满有能力的主。这信心不是倚靠我们的聪明智慧,而是全心倚靠神(箴言 3:5-6)。我们信靠祂,是因为祂的意念高过我们的意念,祂的道路高过我们的道路(以赛亚书 55:9)。正因为我们信靠祂,我们仍能平静安稳地等候神的时间、旨意和带领(诗篇 37:7)。

等候,对基督徒而言是一件非常平常的事。亚伯拉罕等候以撒的诞生二十年之久(希伯来书 6:15);摩西在旷野中等候了40年,才被领进那应许之地;耶稣也‘忍受了十字架,轻看了羞辱,现在就坐在神宝座的右边(希伯来书 12:2)’。很多时候基督徒的生命也是在等候,像等候基督的再来,等候成为祂的新妇。

值得感恩的是,在我们的生命中有许多机会,让我们可以遇见操练我们信心的人、事和物。事实上,圣经给了我们许多实际的处理方案(提摩太后书 3:16-17)。我们蒙召为要警告那些怠慢和做破坏者,鼓励那些心灰意冷者,帮助那些需要帮助者;但是要做成这些事,我们都需要有耐心(帖撒罗尼迦前书 5:14)。与别人对立时,我们需要避免与他们起争执和怨恨他们,反而要友善并愿意教导,且温柔地指导他们,好叫他们能够知道并认识真理,远离魔鬼的诱惑(提摩太后书 2:24-26)。若我们禁不住想抱怨某个人时,要记得神如何将我们从罪恶中拯救出来,这样,我们就会学习去饶恕他(歌罗西书 3:13)。

因此,当你下一次碰到一些考验你耐心的情况或是人时,要记得向神献上感恩,因为他们在帮助你塑造你的品格!不要放弃操练耐心,因为当时候一到,我们将能看见坚忍持守所带来的果效(加拉太书 6:9)。在这一切之上,要在盼望中喜乐,在患难中坚忍,祷告要恒切(罗马书 12:12)。

P.O.W.E.R. for Living

Many times we hear that Christians should have the ‘power’ to overcome sin, trails and temptations. We should have the ‘power’ to do what Christ has called us to do. And yet, many times we fail, even in the simplest things. We do things that we know we shouldn’t be doing, and we feel guilty for having done so. We repent, hoping to overcome the challenge, but more often than not, we fail again and again. The following POWER acronym will help you to remember the essential elements to building a good foundation as well as help you to grow spiritually.

 

P – PRAY

Christians who want to grow need to communicate with God. In prayer, we express gratitude, confess our sins, and come to our Father with requests for ourselves, and for others. In Psalms 145:18, God promises to be near all who go to Him in prayer. (Pslam 145:18 “The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth”). While it is good that we designate a special time to pray, remember that God is always with you, and you can pray anytime and anywhere – while you are driving, while you are cooking up a meal, or while you are resting.

 

O – OBEY

Jesus said in John 14:21 “He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I iwill love him and manifest Myself to him” and in John 14:23, Jesus said “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him”.

 

Obey

 

Our obedience to His commands are an indicator of our love for Him. However, we cannot do this on our own strength, and this is one of the reasons we have been given the Holy Spirit. As we yield to the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit will give us the power to walk in obedience. Galatians 5:16-17 says ‘I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish’.

 

W – WORSHIP

When we say worship, the first thing that comes to mind is of Christians gathered together singing praises to our Lord during a church service, or during a small group meeting. However, our devotion to God should be one that in continuous. In public, we should indeed unite with our fellow believers to bring praise to God, as written in Psalm 111:1 “Praise the LORD! I will praise the LORD with my whole heart, in the assembly of the upright and in the congregation”. In private, we should worship God in our thoughts and prayers as written in Psalm 34:1 “I will bless the LORD at all times: His praise shall continually be in my mouth.

 

E – EVANGELIZE

As we tell others about what Christ has done, we will find ourselves growing spiritually. The good news of the gospel is too be shared, and you will be surprised at how many people will be touched by your testimony. No matter how ‘big’ or ‘small’ a testimony is, share it, and you will soon find people asking you about your faith. Christ gives us the great commission in Matthew 28:19-20 ‘Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, eve to the end of the age.’ Do not be afraid of sharing your faith. It may seem scary at first, but trust that God will give you the words to speak.

R – READ

The most direct source of spiritual growth comes from reading the Bible. It is God’s word for us, every day. 1 Peter 2:2 says “as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow”. God’s word teaches us how to live, and it gives power to live a successful Christian life!

To be an authentic disciple, we cannot be separated from the power of God. We need the passion of Jesus. We need fresh fire from heaven. Authentic discipleship is one that has the power of God. We need the power of God!

Pastor Benedict Rajan, Senior Pastor of Calvary City Church in Johor Bahru recently preached at Life Church Castle Hill, a thriving multi-cultural church located in the North West suburbs of Sydney, Australia, on the 9th February, 2014.

 

 

“We have been created to be the house of power for God,” shared Ps Rajan. God gave the church the power to develop and influence the community. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works (Ephesians 2:10).

 

Luke 24:49

49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.

 

Matthew 10:1

1 And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.

 

Acts 1:8

But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.

 

“When Jesus said the word ‘power’, He had three Greek words in mind when he said this. These three words will revolutionize your life and make you an authentic disciple for Jesus,” shared Ps Rajan.

 

1. Dunamis (Daily Living Power)

Dunamis is an inherent power that helps us in our daily living. It is inside of us and resides in us. This is the power that helps us to listen to and understand God’s word, helps us to pray, and to overcome our weaknesses. In Matthew 26:41, Jesus reminds his disciples to watch and pray, lest they fall into temptation. For the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. We can come in confidence before God and make our petitions known to Him, for He is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us (Ephesians 3:20).

Dunamis power is the power that helps us live a life as the salt of the earth and as a light for Jesus. The bible reminds us that as Christians, we are the light of the world, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven,” (Matthew 5:16).

 

 

It is a Christian power and authority, enabling us to stand firm in the face of the attack of the flesh. Habits can be broken, because God is on our side. When we allow God to work in our lives, He will renew our inward man day by day (2 Corinthians 4:16). We have the power to overcome the world. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world (1 John 5:4).

 

2. Crestos (Miracle Working Power)

Crestos power or miracle working power is the power that will make us relevant to society. “As a Christian, we are made for the supernatural, not just the natural,” remarked Ps Rajan. Crestos is a miracle working power that works through faith in God.

 

Mark 9:23

23 Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.

 

Mark 10:27

27 But Jesus looked at them and said, “With men it is impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.

 

It is this same power that raised Jesus up from the dead and seated Him at God’s right hand in the heavenly places (Ephesians 1:19, 20).

In Mark 16:17-18, we are told that signs and wonders will follow those who believe. In Jesus’ name, the sick shall be healed upon the laying of hands.

 

 

Ps Rajan then continued to share this testimony.

“Not long ago, I prayed for a little girl at the hospital. The family were not Christians. The very next day her mother informed me that the girl had been discharged from (the) hospital as she was well enough to go home. Her mother then invited me to her house. As I stepped into the house I was greeted by a tall statue (of another faith), which the family members prayed to. I then told the girl’s mother that it was because she believed in Jesus that her daughter was healed of severe asthma. If she gave her heart to Jesus, her daughter would be completely healed of the asthma and would no longer have anymore such attacks. The mother then joyfully gave her heart to Jesus. When the woman’s husband heard that both his wife and their daughter had accepted Jesus as their saviour, he became angry and told his wife that she and their daughter could go to church but he would never leave (his god). I told the woman not to pressure or nag at her husband but just pray for him and win him over by her good conduct (1 Peter 3:1). The husband being a contractor had plans to build a house. Before carrying out the construction, he went to visit a feng shui master for advice. As the feng shui master turned his feng shui wheel, he turned to the man and said, 'I’m sorry, I cannot help you because your wife has got more light than the light that I can show you.' This is the light of Jesus that outshines any other light! This is crestos power in action. Firstly, because the girl was miraculously healed of asthma. Secondly, because the girl and her mother were saved when they believed in Jesus. Thirdly, because the shining light of Jesus was revealed to the husband in such an awesome fashion!”

 

3. Exouxia (Spiritual Authority)

Exouxia is a spiritual authority. The apostle Paul exhorts us to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might (Ephesians 6:10). We are people of authority for God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, of love, and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). In fact, we have been empowered to be more than conquerors! (Romans 8:37)

We need not be fearful, or be easily intimidated, manipulated, or overrun by circumstances. God has given us a brand new spiritual authority and anointed us with fresh oil (Psalms 92:10).

 

 

We can overrule those things that have been taking advantage of us and have power and authority over the enemy. When we submit to God and resist the devil, the devil will flee from us (James 4:7). This is the authority that God has given to us that we may overrule the works of darkness and establish the works of righteousness in our lives. We do not cast out demons according to our own power and knowledge but according to the power of God.

 

1 John 4:4

You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

 

Exouxia restores our confidence back to God. Whatever we ask of Him, we receive because we keep His commandments and do those things which are pleasing to Him. 

 

1 John 3:20-21

20 For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. 21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God.

 

“How can we access this power? We need to have a consistent walk with God. It’s about a relationship with God and an earnest prayer life, that we may know Him. Seek and desire to walk right with God,” said Ps Rajan.

 

Philippians 3:10

10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death,

 

John Wesley once said, “If you are on fire, people will travel miles to catch this fire.” Jesus is coming back to a church that is alive. Set your heart ablaze and on fire for God, being fervent in spirit and serving the Lord (Romans 12:11).

Ps Rajan then made an altar call to pray for those who wanted to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit, that they may have this manifold power to overcome obstacles in life and to serve God as disciples.

 

 

Luke 11:9-13

“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 If a son asks for bread[a] from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

 

Act 2:1-4

1 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Ozymandias and the Sands of Time: Exodus Part 1

In our schooldays, most of us would have to learn a collection of poems as part of our literature lessons. There were many that were delightful and memorable, and I certainly remember a number of these fondly. Yet there were some that did not quite make much sense — at least, at the time that some pupils, like myself, found!

One of them that stuck in my mind was this poem titled ‘Ozymandias’ by Percy B. Shelley. It is without any doubt, a beautiful poem. But I did not know who the person was, or why Shelley thought so much about him that he composed this poem. And so I found it frustrating, and yet beautiful!

 

 

OZYMANDIAS OF EGYPT

I met a traveller from an antique land

Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone

Stand in the desert. Near them in the sand,

Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown

And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command

Tell that its sculptor well those passions read

Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,

The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed;

And on the pedestal these words appear:

“My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:

Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!”

Nothing beside remains. Round the decay

Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare,

The lone and level sands stretch far away.

 

Percy Bysshe Shelley

1792-1822

 

 

Shelley’s poem has to do with a kingdom that now lay in ruins in the sands; and of course, one of the figures in Egyptian or Mesopotamian history was clearly likely. Yet I could not seem to find anyone with this name, or similar names. 

I have left it at there, in the classroom, and thought no more of it.

Yet, strangely, in my later years, in learning the rudiments of hieroglyphs, I finally found the answer. The name was a transliteration of ‘Ooser Maat Re’, the name that we know more familiarly as Rameses II, Pharaoh of Egypt.

I could not tell if Shelley knew his identity, but he did choose his subject well! The deciphering of the hieroglyphic script was in its infancy at his time. Jean-Francois Champollion had only just broken the code through his mastery and matching of the Rosetta stone story in 1822, the year that Shelley later drowned at sea in a storm off the coast of Marseilles.

 

 

And so the cartouche, the king’s inscription of his name in the stone carving, was read as it appeared. Nowadays, of course, we would read it as “Ra Maat Ooser”, in line with Ramases as we well know.

‘Ooser Maat Re’ meant Ra, the Egyptian sun god, was “ooser” or powerful, and so the man who bore his title was likewise. Maat was the Egyptian goddess of justice, and pictorially gave an equivalent meaning of justice.

The hieroglyph script had no vowels, and scribes who carved royal inscriptions also used different hieroglyphs to spell eloquently the name of the Pharaoh. Thus, in the cartouche also, was this king, powerful and just, for he was flanked on his sides by his god and goddess, Ra and Maat. 

 

 

Of the Pharaohs of Egypt, Rameses II had one of the longest reigns. He ruled for 66 years (1290 – 1224 B.C.). His expeditions and campaigns were well recorded, since every Pharaoh wished to be well remembered. And so the temple inscriptions, especially at Abu Simbel and Ramesseum in Thebes, left us with impressive and illustrious accounts of his reign.

Rameses II had always been figured as the likely Pharaoh of the Exodus. We do not know with certainty. It is probable, since various circumstantial evidences support this view. But the problems have always been the dates of events.

Unless we have certainty of the Exodus dates, or parallel Egyptian records of the event, it is best to leave it, as it is presently — unconfirmed. No Pharaoh would deem it fit to speak of his failures and defeats. And so, unfortunately, we have mostly the records of the Pharaohs’ victories and achievements.

 

 

One of the hopeful trails is the mention of the storehouses of the Pharaoh. In Exodus 1:11, the Hebrews were reduced to a state of slavery, subject to forced labor, and they built Pithom and Rameses.

‘Pr’, or in our equivalent ‘Pi’, means house. Pi-thom and Pi-Rameses were the two cities specifically built to be granaries and store cities. They were in Lower Egypt, that is, in the Delta region of Egypt, where the River Nile forms a massive fertile flat land for agriculture, before discharging into the Mediterranean Sea.

This mention of the store cities does point to Rameses II as the likely Pharaoh, through giving his name to the city. But it is by no means certain, since the Pharaoh could assume the city’s name, even if this was unlikely.

 

 

Rameses I who ruled for hardly a year, in about 1304 B.C., did not build these cities, and therefore, did not figure in the Exodus account.

Sethos I (1304 – 1290 B.C.), Rameses II’s father, commenced the building of the two cities, but it was Rameses II who made the cities as we know them.

Be that as it may, Shelley is quite right to say, ‘Nothing beside remains’. Whatever man’s greatness and achievements, the sands of time level all to nothing.

如何在磨难和试验中保持安稳的心?

神对我们的生命有伟大的计划,并且他希望使用我们为他做伟大的事。但是,在他把我们放在一个可以充分发挥我们天赋和才能的位置之前,我们必须学习如何保持安稳、可靠并且控制我们的情绪。

作为基督徒,我们需要活出基督式的生活,这样神才可以使用我们做他呼召我们去做的事情,这不仅仅是为我们自己的缘故,也是为了我们周围人的益处。这意味着,我们的品格应该在基督里健全,我们使用神所赐的天赋的动机应该是纯正的。

在事工早期,当我在家中带领一场小型圣经学习时,我人生的呼召就是教导话语,就如我今天通过我国际性事工所做的。但神那时候不能够让我完全发挥出那种能力,因为我还没有属灵的成熟来与之匹配。

我们需要做的第一件事是停止找借口。作为在基督里重生的信徒,我们可以获得圣灵的能力来自制。并且神永远不会让你做一件你不能做的事;关键是学习依靠他获得力量来做你需要做的事。当我们这样做的时候,我们能够管理我们情绪。

同时很重要的是,我们要意识到我们处在属灵的争战当中。保持安稳的人可以打赢争战。因为你的敌人撒旦以很多不同的方式攻击你,你实在需要知道如何反抗他。

这节经文说,神和魔鬼都在看着我们。当困难的情形来到时,我们可以选择不安,也可以选择保持平安。魔鬼试图让我们不安。但是如果我们保持镇静,撒旦知道他不能让我们不安。这也是我们对神的一个证明:我们真正信靠的是他。

Desret, Kemet and Exodus: PART 2

Most of our images of Egypt are about a dry, sandy land, saved only by the River Nile that flows right across the length of the country. It is this gift of the Nile that makes Egypt hospitable for life, and that sustains its civilisation over the millennia.

From our perspective today, that is true. In fact, the English word, ‘desert’ is derived from an Egyptian word that aptly describes the barrenness of the land. It is ‘desret’ in Egyptian, meaning ‘red land’.

 

 

But the soil was good, and that was how the Egyptians saw it. They called it ‘Kemet’.  It means ‘black land’ in Egyptian.

The Arab conquerors in the 7th century saw this also as ‘black land’, for they referred to the strange Egyptian texts as ‘al keme’ — from Kemet. That is the origin of the word, alchemy, of our world. So then, words that hardly seem recognisable imperceptibly seeped into our common use!

But this description as ‘Kemet’ indicates that Egypt is hardly a barren, sandy land such as we perceive.

 

 

A long time ago, perhaps five thousands years or more, we would not have such a confined impression of deserts and sands. It would not be quite the ‘desret’ that we think, but there would be something more of a 'kemet'. The land was fertile and it had decent rainfall in a larger part of the country than we know today. Egypt was not totally desert.

In fact, the Sahara and much of the Middle East were much more fertile than today. For the land stretching from Ur of the Chaldea in the Persian Gulf to the Nile delta, formed a rich region that we referred to as the ‘Fertile Crescent’ in its glory days. Egypt was the granary of the Roman Empire.

 

 

And this is not about the abundance of oil in the Middle East that speaks of luxuriant vegetation millions of years ago.

It seems so unlikely! For we think of Egypt as the land of pyramids and the sphinx — dry country where sparse rainfall spared those colossal monuments from early decay and erosion. Yet, if the evidence is examined from another perspective, its past need not be so limited.

The lower half of the Sphinx suffered evident erosion, but this erosion was not by wind or sand storm. The evidence seems to confirm that this erosion was by water precipitation, that is, good rainfall — that over time, caused the characteristics of the Sphinx’s lower half’s erosion!

 

 

It is with this possible background that we can picture to ourselves the meaning of the story of Joseph and the Pharaoh’s seven good years and seven lean years. For Jacob sent his sons to Egypt to buy grain in the time of famine. It was also a time when the Pharaoh was more civil!

So also, in the Exodus, the Israelites complained bitterly that they always had plenty to eat in Egypt, in contrast to their sojourn through the wilderness of Sin to Mount Sinai! Thus, the Israelites said to Aaron and Moses, “If only we had died by the LORD’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.” Exodus 16:3

It was ironic. One picture has to do with our image of starving slaves in a dry environment. The other has to do with unenlightened slaves. Here were the Israelites, saved from slavery, yearning to return to bondage again, for sake of another meal!

And it was in response to this grumbling and bitterness that God gave them — manna. Their bread would come from heaven, not from man, or the earth. Exodus 16:11.

 

 

But one wonders anew why the desert came over Egypt and much of the land from the Sahara to the Middle East in recent millennia. If God made manna come over the desert, through dew in dry air on the sands, it seems so strange why God allowed the deserts to encroach!

So then, we ponder — who was it that Isaiah spoke of, when he wrote of the demise of the king of Babylon:

 

“Is this the man who shook the earth

and made kingdoms tremble,

the man who made the world a desert,

 who overthrew its cities

and would not let his captives go home?”

Isaiah 14:17

 

Perhaps then, the Exodus is also not exactly a story only about wretched slavery in Egypt. Goshen where the Israelites lived was a fertile area, and the Israelites were there for 430 years.

A Long Time Ago in the Galaxies and Creation

We see in the Gospel that John was revealing things of God when he described Jesus as ‘in the beginning was the Word’. It asks us to relate God’s Creation to Jesus through the Word.

It is written: “By the word of the LORD were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth. He gathers the waters of the sea into jars; he puts the deeps into storehouses.” Psalm 33:6, 7

So we seek further to know how Jesus as the word of the LORD made the heavens, as the Psalmist also declared that “He gathers the waters into jars” at Creation.

 

 

The Waters of the Sea

This portion of the verse is not about the Father’s spoken words, but is about actively working and performing it. This work took time, as “He gathers the waters of the sea into jars”.  So we seek to know this meaning that tells us Jesus was working with the heavenly Father in Creation.

In this verse, “the sea” obviously does not mean the waters of earth’s ocean. The thoughts here are in relation to the heavens. Here, “the seas” describes the waters in outer space.

The Hebrew word for sea is yam, and it has many different aspects in meaning, besides the “sea” that laps the shores of land that we think of. Yam also means the west, as opposite of the east. The meaning of yam depends on the context that the word is used in Hebrew.

We know that matter needed to be drawn together by gravitational forces to form the celestial bodies.  Thus we understand “gathering the waters of the sea into jars” are in the context of — the beginning of the formation of galaxies out of swirling clouds of matter. We can picture elementary matter being gathered or pulled together, like water swirling as it is being poured into a jar.

You only have to look into the night sky to see the swirling clouds of particles of matter in the galaxies. This is what our Milky Way is composed of, in large part. And there are others like the Oort Cloud, Magellanic Clouds, the Orion Nebula, and so forth.

 

 

So it is written: God said, “Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water. So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. God called the expanse “sky”. Genesis 1:6-8

We see that it is Jesus as the word of the LORD who gathers the waters as God commanded, and made the expanse called “sky”, so that the waters beneath the sky are separated from the waters above it. The “waters of the seas” above the sky are in outer space.

Likewise, Job says of God: He speaks to the sun and it does not shine; he seals off the light of the stars. He alone stretches out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea. He is the Maker of the Bear and Orion, the Pleiades and the constellations of the south. Job 9:7-9

How wonderful it is to picture that God alone is able to stretch the expanse of the universe and He alone is able to tread in outer space, the waves of the sea!

We also understand that as God stretches out the heavens, space is created by its expansion. We have a picture that what is beyond this universe is being pushed away — and so “the deeps are put into storehouses”. We remember the Holy Spirit hovers over the face of the waters.

So the Psalmist sings “Praise him you highest heavens, and you waters above the skies. Let them praise the name of the LORD, for he commanded and they were created. Psalm 148:4,5

 

The Stars that Shine

Psalm 33 shows us other aspects in Creation when we consider that God made the universe. Here, in contrast to Genesis, the Psalmist does not focus or highlight the earth, as it is about the heavens in declaring the glory of God.

Many will note that stars and other celestial shining bodies were not formed on the first day of Creation. As we know, stars are formed when matter are ignited to burn due to enormous force from gravitational collapse.

Since matter must first be formed, and we know that matter only came about at the time that the primordial light was released, stars did not form on the first day of Creation. As Scripture rightly tells us, stars formed later in time to give light in the universe.

Thus, in this context, the earlier discussion on the “primordial light” must not be taken to mean that light in our universe totally come from “primordial light”. When God said, “Let there be light” and there was light, we understand there is a wider meaning to have light in this universe. This would not be the case if we only consider the “primordial light” event.

 

 

The gathering of the waters points us to understand that God will set light to shine always in His universe, and this light will continue to come as the gathering and gravitational collapse of the waters lead to stars being formed. So then, in speaking of “there was light” and “He gathers the waters of the sea”, we see a wondrous revelation from God in the heavens. The stars shine to bring us light continually.

 

Plasma and Primordial Light Contrasted

This can be also viewed from another perspective. If we consider matter as we know in our daily life, we think of its existence as gases, liquids and solids. We may have thought that Creation gave a gaseous state of matter which gave out light. However, our universe is more than this idea.

The reality is that there is a 4th state of matter which is called plasma. This plasma is the material that exists in our sun and the stars. We also see plasma when we switch on the neon light, or witness the lightning in a storm, or in an atomic explosion. Plasma consists of light emitting energy plus ionized (charged particles of) matter in a hot gaseous state. 

However, in this contrast, we also need to note that at Creation, the “primordial plasma” (if we may call Creation’s energy in an analogous way) did not originate in this way like the stars’ plasma. The Big Bang’s “primordial plasma” is a unified state of energy-matter bundles, and would only transform to matter as it cooled down with time. Light was not emitted because it would take years for light to be released. The “primordial plasma material” was dark as Genesis 1:2 tells us, and is therefore different.

Seeking God’s Light

These studies weary most of us. Thankfully, it is in God’s wisdom that we are finite in our intelligence. God does not require man to have high intelligence to know Him. Thankfully, we do not have to be rocket scientists to understand Creation.

God shows Himself, so that even a child can know Him. It is God’s good pleasure to reveal truth and infiniteness to those that seek Him, to the simple and to the wise, to young and old. It comes to those whose eyes are opened by the Lord, for it is in His light that we see light. Psalm 36:9.

Hence, in being simple, we see light in God’s light. So we shall see the glory of God shining around us, just as the shepherds did when Jesus was born and the glory of the Lord shone around. So we rejoice with the Psalmist when he sings:

The heavens declare the glory of God;

the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

When we give thanks to God for His Creation, and look up into the sky at night, we shall see the light of God’s glory.

These days, insecurity seems to be everywhere. Many, including Christians, are afraid, timid, lacking confidence and just generally feel bad about who they are. However, when Jesus dies on the cross for us, He took away our sins and then he gave us right standing and made us perfect in Him. God does not want us to go around being afraid and lacking confidence; He wants us to be bold, fearless, confident, and free!

Don’t Compare

When we are insecure, we tend to compare ourselves with other people, and feel the need to ‘keep up’ with them. We try to be like everyone else, but the truth is, we can only be who God has created us to be, and He has created each one of us unique. While this doesn’t mean that we can’t improve on areas that need to be improved upon, we need to realize that God has engineered each one of us differently, each with our own personality and traits.

God made each one of us an original, and He has a unique plan for each of us. Comparing ourselves to others will only lead to frustration. Having the confidence and freedom to be who God has created us to be leads to peace and joy. Galatians 6:4-5 says ‘Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load’.

What Are You Looking At?

Many times we look at ourselves when we should be looking at God. We see our weaknesses, and when we focus too much on how weak and awful we are, we will become timid and fearful, and we will convince ourselves that everything is too hard to accomplish, and we that we do not amount to anything.

There are some people who look at their weaknesses and thing ‘I could never do something great for God. And then there are others who look at their strengths and thing ‘I don’t need help, I can do this on my own.’ Regards less of what we can or cannot do, God wants us to put our confidence in Him because the truth of the matter is, we can do nothing apart for Him!

David is an example of a person who knew who he was in Christ. While the entire army of Israel was too frightened to fight Goliath, David walked straight out to the battlefield and killed Goliath with his slingshot. He was able to do this because he was looking at God, and not at himself. We too can haven’t his confidence when we learn who we are in Christ.

 

 

Be Bold

God wants us to be bold and fearless, to be able to believe Him for big things. Ephesians 3:20 says ‘Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.’

Perhaps God is waiting for us to boldly step out and ask Him for things that go beyond what we think is possible. Our insecurities will make us feel like we are not worthy to even ask, but remember, because of what Christ has done, we don’t get what deserve, but we get what Jesus deserves.

Wherever we are in our journey with God, or whatever is happening, know that God sees us as perfect because of His Son. And because of this we can go forward with confidence, leaving all our insecurities behind.

Decisional Regeneration

I cannot imagine the Lord of Glory and all Creation, sitting on His throne in heaven, wringing His hands saying, “I hope that Suzy accepts me today!” “Oh, how I wish that Johnny would make a decision to believe in me!” This is the image that many imply in their approach to evangelism. What they fail to realize is that it is not God that needs our acceptance. The reverse is true; we are the ones that need His acceptance.

By making a brief review of the history of the Church during the past few centuries, we can see there have been some trends and shifts in Christian thinking. This is especially true in the realm of evangelism. Our evangelistic approach has gone from the open air, to tent revivals and in this past century, to crusades in large auditoriums, coliseums, and even stadiums.

 

 

During this time, a new movement has risen that has developed the predominant way of presenting the gospel; it is called evangelicalism. Almost all of the prominent speakers and theologians of the past 50 years have been from, or adopted most of evangelicalism’s views about salvation; in particular, the idea of “accepting Christ” and “making a decision” for Christ.

Most people have been taught to believe that this is the old time Gospel that has been preached for nearly 2000 years. If we are to take an unbiased view of doctrinal history, we would find that these terms are a very recent phenomena. Strangely, the way we present the invitation to the Gospel today seems to be absent from the majority of Church history and the Scriptures themselves! Is it possible that we have created a “new and different Gospel?” I believe we have.

I believe that our current methods have put us in danger of putting too much credit for salvation into the decision of man and not enough upon the grace and initiative of God.

 

 

Christian theologians throughout history have normally emphasized the inability of man concerning his ability to save himself and the necessity of the intervention of God in salvation. Because of man’s fallen nature, it is necessary that God must intervene by graciously giving man the ability to believe and to respond. Modern Evangelicalism has taken the attitude that man can respond at any time they wish by a mere act of man’s will.

This reduces the Gospel to a matter of a “decision” on the part of the individual, or a mere reciting of an incantation called the “Sinner’s Prayer.” The current method of receiving salvation that is used in modern evangelistic meetings and crusades, has substituted the conviction and witness of the Holy Spirit with group dynamics and professional salesmanship.

You may wonder why I would say such a critical thing. It is because those who have followed up with respondents a year later after their “decision” or “accepting the Lord” have found that the defection rate from Christianity among this group is a shocking 80-90%. The numbers touted to give legitimacy to these preachers and crusades sounds so impressive until we see they are creating more backsliders than believers. It should jolt us to see that more people were spiritually stillborn than born-again! This tragic rate of failure is due to the fact that many of these people were encouraged to respond to an altar call in respond to a “sales pitch” from man and not from a call of God through a conviction of their sin from the Holy Spirit. Manipulation and salesmanship may yield large numbers of people coming forward and affirmative answers on decision or prayer cards but it cannot do what really counts, that is, “convert” the soul to Christ. This is solely the domain of the Holy Spirit.

 

 

Nowhere does the Bible tell unbelievers to make a decision for Christ. All of the appeals like “Choose you this day whom ye will serve,” (Joshua 24:15) are addressed to those who were in the family of Israel already but were wavering on changing gods. “God forbid that we should forsake the Lord to serve other god’s.” (vs.16) We are told in John 1:12 and 13 that “…as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God,” and verse 13 clarifies that we do not give spiritual birth to ourselves but our ability to receive Him is based upon, “Which were born, not of blood, nor the will of flesh, nor the will of man but of God.”

It is clear in Scripture that man on his own cannot and will not desire to be reconciled to God. Romans 4:11 tells us, “There is none that seek after God.” We have been so thoroughly corrupted through the fall of Adam that there is nothing within this infected nature of ours that will allow us to desire or seek a relationship with God. God must initiate the salvation process by reaching out to us first, convicting us, and convincing us of sin and of Jesus Christ. John 6:39 and 44 clearly states that “No man can come to me accept the Father which has sent Me draw him,” and we may add, “this spoke he of the Spirit.” The timing of His conviction is determined by His will and not upon the will of a human vehicle like a preacher or pastor.

If God were reaching out and convicting individuals 24 hours a day, we would not be told that “….there is none that seek after God.” If we all felt this calling and conviction every day of our lives, we would feel that it was a natural thing for man to seek God and to initiate his own salvation. If God were present in convicting power at every presentation of the Gospel, how do we explain that we do not witness the compliance and conversion for those who respond and see the remainder who are rebellious, standing there resisting, white knuckle and gripping the pews? By universal experience, we know that we are not overwrought with conviction every time we heard the Gospel message.

It is hard for us to understand why someone can hear the Gospel and not feel the least bit effected by it one time and when it is presented at another time, it strike conviction and is either accepted or knowingly rejected. At the times when there was no effect at all, we should realize that it is because it is not God’s will and timing for this person. To pressure for “decision” at this point is nothing less than man’s manipulation and is not to be confused with God’s conviction. We run the risk of destroying the respondent’s hopes if they are declared “saved” when all they do is respond by just mechanically reciting a “sinner’s prayer.” We can conclude this by saying that it is only if God is initiating salvation in an individual that they are called to respond and at that time are they free to accept or reject the gracious offer. The timing of when this offer happens is up to the will of God. We are fooling ourselves if we think that we have anything to do in determining when and where God is to be working in the lives of individuals.

Some may pose the question, “Then are you saying it was wrong for Peter to preach to the 3,000 on the day of Pentecost?” This is an overreaction to what has been said. I am not against large evangelistic efforts in any way. What I am against is a humanistic and not a Scriptural means of presenting the Gospel. On the day of Pentecost, we see that the Holy Spirit was at work in the individuals who cried out to Peter, “What shall we do?” Did he say, “Make a decision for Christ?” or “Accept Him right now?” No! Peter’s answer to them was to “repent!” The very thing that is hardly preached and insisted upon at these crusades!

 

 

One thing that is for sure, it is impossible for someone to “decide” whether to believe. Either they believe or they do not! If there is anything that an individual is called upon to decide, it is whether they will obey or disobey that which has been revealed to them as true. When one is confronted with the Gospel, along with clear conviction of the Spirit, they know they cannot help but believe it is true. In that moment, they are responsible to decide whether they will repent and obey the call of God, or to refuse to cast their trust upon Christ and choose hell. The Gospel calls those who believe to act upon this faith and repent. It is an issue of obedience and not just an assent to the fact that Jesus died for our sins. A.W. Tozer aptly said, “The whole ‘Accept Christ’ attitude is likely to be wrong, it make Him stand hat-in-hand awaiting our verdict on Him, instead of our kneeling with troubled hearts awaiting His verdict on us. It may even permit us to accept Christ by an impulse of mind or emotions, painlessly, at no loss to our ego and no inconvenience to our usual way of life.”

I know that all of what I have been saying is hard for many Christian workers to accept. We want to see people come to the truth and be saved. In our efforts, are we at times putting too much upon ourselves and not enough upon God? Why have we abandoned the Scriptural means of salvation in favor of overly simplistic and flawed models of presenting the Gospel, like “The Four Spiritual Law” and “Sinner’s Prayer.” All of them are fundamentally flawed in that each of them calls on us to “accept” or to “decide” upon Christ without ever calling the sinner to repentance. A mere acknowledgement that they are “sinners” seems sufficient for them. An acknowledgement of our sinful state is important but it is different than true repentance. One cannot come to Christ in hopes of His precious gift of life with the intent of remaining an enemy of God while refusing to let go of their sins.

The error that seems to be fueling this called Evangelicalism is that its approach is based upon the idea that salvation is a one-shot-of-faith-and-it–is-over theology. It makes salvation a crisis of deciding and accepting an immunization from hell and leaves off the process of obedience and a beginning of a new walk in Christ as optional for the believer. This is not honorable to God, nor is it Scriptural!

 

 

How can we know if someone is saved? The present approach is to get them to say a “Sinner’s Prayer” and we congratulate them that they are now “saved,” child of God and destined for heaven, regardless of how you feel. We tell them to believe God’s promised by faith and not what you feel inside! Is this biblical?

Whenever I share the Gospel with someone and he believes and desires to be saved, I will often lead him in a prayer, much like a sinner’s prayer. However, I always inform him that this prayer does not mean you are already saved. I tell them what I have done is to help them take step one on the road to eternal life. I am mindful that Jesus specifically said in Matthew 24:13 “But he who endures to the end shall be saved.” You don’t win a race just by starting well but you need to finish the race to be a winner. Paul himself rejoiced that he finished his race of life and that now he was confidence of receiving his eternal rewards.

We have no biblical authority to tell someone he is saved. God said, “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.” (Romans 8:16) “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” (Romans 8:14) Our part is to show an unbeliever HOW to be saved. Only the Holy Spirit can DECLARE that person is actually saved.

To compel someone to go against what they know is in their heart is mere humanistic psychology and wishful thinking. We are not doing God or these people any favors by making declaration of salvation when it is the role of the Spirit to validate and convert a soul. The Holy Spirit bears witness, not man, to son-ship and salvation of the individual. If the Holy Spirit is leading them, they will know it! The Scriptures promise it!

Decisional Regeneration is founded upon mysticism and humanism. It is humanistic in that it denies the corrupt nature of man and in essence, it makes man sovereign over God in salvation. It relies on mysticism in that it teaches that a recitation of an incantation or prayer magically guarantees the acceptance of God apart from any evidence coming from God!

Now I am thankful for the 10-20% of those that come forward in these crusades that actually do get saved. The expense involved in this evangelistic work is worth every cent because it results in saved souls. We however, cannot ignore the grave danger of jumping the gun and declaring the unregenerate to have been born-again when the witness of the Spirit has not been confirmed it to the individual.

When they try to walk the Christian walk without being born-again or having the power of the indwelling Spirit, they will utterly fail. By their experience they will be convinced that “Christianity” is a failure because it did not work for them! This will cause them to go through their lives seeking salvation elsewhere but not in Christ, because they will have been convinced from their experience that this “religion” does not work. By giving the unregenerate a false hope of assurance of salvation, we will have successfully inoculated them from Christ forever!

 

 

Who can rightfully declare that a person is saved? A preacher or a man or the Holy Spirit? When a person is genuinely born-again, they will know it. The Holy Spirit will dwell within them and be a witness to their hearts that they are a child of God. The fruit of that salvation must accompany any declaration of salvation. Because Decisional Regeneration generally ignores repentance from sin, it implies that one has salvation while they are still in willful rebellion against God. This is an impossibility.

“Whoever is born of God does not commit sin…” (1 John 3:9) It implies that sin is something alien to his life. It does not mean he will never sin but sin is not a way of life with him. There are some Christians who have embraced the teaching of “cheap grace” suggesting that it does not matter how many or how long a Christian continues to sin, he will never be lost. They believe we don’t have to worry about the sin question anymore because all our sins past, present and future have already been forgiven by Christ. They make Paul’s admonition in Titus 2:11-12 absolutely meaningless – “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously and godly in the present age.”

Saving faith must include a willingness to abandon any rebellion towards God. One cannot trust in faith that their sins deserve hell, while inwardly refusing to turn from that sin. One cannot be in rebellion and faith at the same time. While we can give people hope that they can be saved by faith, it is an error to declare them saved apart from the witness of the Spirit and the evidence of a changed life. When God regenerates a soul, the person is changed. It is inevitable. If one continues on unchanged, while declaring that they are “saved,” they are deluded and deceived. If you are indeed saved, the Holy Spirit will definitely change you from inside. The Spirit will witness to you that you are a child of God and He will give you victory over sin if you obey Him. Without this inner witness, one does not have the true evidence of salvation.

The secret to your breakthrough is praying! God will do more things through your prayers than He will do in any other way.

Your prayers can move the hand of God to transform and change your situation.  You may not understand the mystery of prayer. However, the question many of us will ask is: why pray when you are not getting any results?

But instead of quitting we should seek for wisdom as to how to take our prayers to a new level of breakthrough.

We need to be aware that there are some demonic barriers that we need to conquer that may be blocking your prayers from reaching God.

Meanwhile the question we need to ask ourselves is this: Does GOD has all power to move in your situation? Or do we bother God enough for Him to release power in your prayer? Again, if we bother Him enough will He do something in our situation? Can we earn answers to our prayers?

 

1 John 5:14,15

" And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he hears us. " 

 

If Jesus needed to pray to remain in the Father’s will, how much more do we need to pray?

 

GOD HAS DEPOSITED HIS POWER IN US..

If you want to carry your prayers to the next level. It is extremely important for you to understand that God has deposited His power in us in prayer. You will become a powerful person of prayer if you can understand this statement. It will help you to understand how and why we keep praying despite what you are seeing..

 

Luke 24:49

Behold I send the promise of my father upon you but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endured with power from on high.

Acts 1:8

But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you….. There is a power that is deposited in you by God through the Holy Spirit.

 

Ephesians 3:20 Now to him who is able to do 1) exceedingly 2)abundantly 3)above all, that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.  What does it say? " according to the POWER that works in us." Where did this power come from? Luke 24:49 and Acts 1:8 says that if you endured, you receive power from the Holy Spirit and it is deposited in you for its function in your life.

How many of you believe with all your heart that God is going to answer your prayers exceedingly and abundantly above all that we can ask or think according to the power that works in us?

You say, I have been praying for so long but I am not getting any results. Often you come across people who will even tell you " I am tired of praying."

 

GOD INDEED IS LISTENING DESPITE WHAT YOU ARE SEEING

Now the key to your answer is found in the last phrase in this verse “According to the power that works in us.". It speaks about the power that is residing in us, it speaks about the power that is deposited in us, the question is how much of this power that you are willing to distribute, release, measure out in your prayers)

The power that God has deposited in our life is not for us to keep it safely! It’s not for it to lie dormant in you! It is to be activated! It is to enable us to function and be powerful in this life.

 

WE MUST RELEASE HIS POWER THROUGH OUR PRAYERS

How much of Gods power are you measuring out in your situation?

 

GOD'S UNLIMITED POWER IS LIMITED ACCORDING TO OUR PRAYERS.

WE LIMIT GOD BECAUSE OF OUR IGNORANCE of the power that belongs to us. The power that resides in us.

God has all power, He has unlimited power but it is limited in my life because of my ignorance of the power that belongs to me and therefore my prayers becomes ineffective. The more you release the power deposited in you, in your prayers the greater the results will be. The question is how much of power is flowing out of you?

We are always crying out to God to rescue us. We are always waiting on God to move in our situation but God is waiting on us to move and release that power that has been given to us already.

Why did Elijah pray 7 times? God already said it was going to rain. Why was Elijah persistent in prayer? But he prayed 7 times because he was releasing power that was deposited in him to fulfil the word of God in his life.

Here we see the power of prayer in conjunction with God’s plan and purpose.

 

DANIEL IN PRAYER

 

Why did Daniel pray for 21 days? (Daniel 10:2-3) Daniel was an ordinary man who had an extraordinary relationship with God. The angel explains from the first day that Daniel prayed his prayer was heard in heaven but there was opposition by the “prince of the kingdom of Persia”? The “Prince of Persia” is a demonic force preventing a message from arriving to Daniel, who has been praying for 21 day (Daniel 10)

Listen! Here is what it says the first day you prayed I left heaven with the answer but there is a war in the heavenlies. "But because you kept praying, help was sent to me that I was able to get through to you."

We know there is a war in the heavenly realm – spiritual warfare.( Eph.6:12)

You need to understand something here. Your answer to your prayer is sent out from heaven the first day you prayed.  Have you thought about that?  Have you ever asked yourself: What if Daniel had stopped praying after 20 days? I wonder how many of us give up so easily and stop praying and miss out on God’s help.

I am not denying the fact that God has already done it in the heavenly and that God is in control of everything! But we have been given the power! The authority! To move it from heaven to earth. Yes the work has been done by Jesus but we need to move it. "THY WILL BE DONE ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN" And it is within our jurisdiction! It is within our authority and power which God has already deposited in us. We must release his power through our prayers.

 

GOD ADDS HIS FIRE (Power) TO OUR PRAYERS

Your prayer on earth activates God’s power in heaven.

This is an amazing truth in the Bible. (Rev.5: 8 )God adds His fire to our prayers.

 

Rev.8 :1

Now when He ( that is Jesus) had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and twenty- four elders fell down before the Lamb, each having a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.

Rev.8:4

And the smoke of the incense with the prayers of Gods people (the saints) ascended before God from the angel's hand. (That means your prayer reached Gods throne)

Rev.8:5

Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar and threw it to the earth. And there were noises, thundering, lightnings, and earthquake. ( In other words it affected the atmosphere in the earth)

 

Listen, here is a revelation. There are this bowls (containers of your prayers) in heaven representing every concern and struggle of yours on earth and when these bowls get filled and that incense goes up to the throne of God, your prayers goes up and are accepted.

There is an angel who is appointed and his job is to add the fire from the altar: the fire here represents ( Gods power ! Gods fire! To our prayers) and throws that back to earth to address all your problems that are troubling you.

The question I like to ask you today. How full are your prayer bowls in heaven?  Is it filled with fragrance of incense which rises to God?

 

( Ps. 141:1-2).  David said

May my prayer be set before you like incense.

 

Listen! When you are on your knees you are filling these golden bowls with fragrance of incense and your prayers will not only reach God's throne but it will come down to address your problems that you are praying for right now. GOD INDEED LISTENS TO EVERY PRAYER THAT IS LIFTED TO HIM.

学习模范——是一个人的处事待人方式和态度会让别人为之效仿的典范。许多人会寻找鼓舞和启发我们的学习典范,无疑的是这些模范人选曾有着与我们类似的经验和经历,唯不尽相似的是他们比我们更早体会这些经历。如果我们效仿良好的学习典范,这会让我们的生活比较有保障以及目标导向。我们将能成为情感上更成熟,文化修养更丰富的公民。

 

寻找好的学习榜样

有时,寻找适合我们学习的模范人选是非常重要的!因为学习模范对我们的生命将有深远的影响力!你知道吗?你的学习模范将塑造你的行为和品格!而最后,我们的品格将形塑神所赐给我们的命定!我们的生命最终将与我们学习的典范类似。

不幸的是,有些模范人选最后因为言行不一致,仍会让人失望的。一个人或许可以用言语可以说得富丽堂皇。然而,若他的生活并没有与言行一致时,别人自然而然不会跟随你,因为你丧失了别人对你的信任。

人的品格正是仇敌的目标

仇敌不喜欢我们的品格,因为那是照着神的形象所造的,因此仇敌将用尽办法来摧毁我们的品格。有一件事是我们必须明白的,那就是因着我们堕落的本性,每个人都有各自的盲点和品格上的瑕疵。而仇敌就会用他最大的武器——“诱惑”来摧毁我们,因为他知道一旦他的诡计成功,便能掌控我们的生命。

你是否察觉到其实每个人起初都是诚实的,直到他们跌入引诱里时,就开始变得不诚实。除非人内心产生欲望,否则诱惑对我们并没有任何 的能力。无风不起浪,唯有当一个人的欲望碰上了诱惑,我们才能看得见他/她品格上的瑕疵。换句话说,通过试验才能得到印证。其中一种成熟的领导特质,是能理解逃离邪恶的重要性。要逃离并不容易,正因为前来‘敲门’的仍是个未知数——是机遇或是引诱。许多模范者曾经自满无知地想要炫耀自己的能力反而暴露了自己的不成熟,以致自己陷入危机中:“行为胜于言语”。Benjamin Franklin曾说“做得好,总比说得好更好”。“你们应当有这样的意念 ,这也是基督耶稣的意念”。(腓立比书 2:5

 

学习保罗的榜样

保罗对神的知识带领他过一个对自己和他人都有益的纪律生活。相较于他过去的生活方式,他表现了异常与人的谦虚态度。他更常将自己形容为“不够资格称为使徒”,这全是因着神的恩典,并不是他的背景或是他所拥有的知识(哥林多前书 15:9-10)!一个好的模范会经常效仿保罗的谦卑,然而他也不会让你成为自己的副本。

保罗,一位言行一致的使徒,绝对是别人学习的榜样,他活出自己所传讲的一切。他总是效法基督的样式。他的生活真正反映出神的爱。他确实是一个别人学习的好榜样,凡事总是以非常警醒和谨慎的态度面对。他说:

 

哥林多前书 9:19,24-27

“我虽然自由,不受任何人管辖,但我自愿成为众人的奴仆… 所以我奔跑,不是没有目标的;我斗拳,不是打空气的。我要克制自己的身体,叫身体服我,免得我传了给别人,自己反而落选了。

 

过分尊崇某人是危险的

向我们的良师益友看齐是件好事;甚至询问他们的意见和看法也是有智慧的。但你知道吗?当我们模糊了焦点,并开始过分尊崇他们时,这会变得非常‘危险’。当我们过分强调并效仿某个人时,你会渐渐失去对神的专注。如今有许多的生命被摧毁,正是因为我们被欺哄的灵捆绑并且渐渐远离对神的专注。我们转而将人的形象建造于我们自己的生命里面。当我们过分强调人的重要性时,最后我们只不过是活在欺哄和失望中,因为人往往都会使我们失望。人往往都会让我们失望,但神却会永远不会让我们失望。

彼得也曾是哥尼流学习的榜样。正当彼得一进门时,哥尼流就俯伏在他脚前叩拜他。彼得当时怎样回应他呢?彼得将他拉起来,说:“起来,我也是人。”那是何等谦卑啊!

 

你上帝独特的创造

向某个人看齐、效仿他人的危险和后果是我们或许会失去了神当初所赐给我们的特质窃取了神在我们生命中的命定!你是照着神的样式的独特造物;你的基因是独一无二的。甚至在世界上七十亿人口中并无法找到跟你有相同指纹的人!

你知道吗?我们每个人的生命中都有各自的命定。我们需要明白到并不是每一个人都适合成为你的学习榜样。有些人似乎不与你同路!无法融入同一艘船!

你是否曾察觉到有的时候同样的一件衣服,穿在别人的身上时,看起来非常好看;然而当穿在自己身上时,却有相反的效果?那是因为每一个人都是独特的个体!在上帝的眼中,我们都是独特的创造物!

 

耶稣是最好的学习模范

A Prisoner… of Hope

Show me and I will believe. We are a generation that wants to see it before we believe it. We have a hard time believing that God is working on our behalf, until and unless we see something happening with our natural eyes. However, this isn’t the way God operates. Whether we can see it or not, God is working on things in our lives. Jeremiah 29:11 says ‘For I know the plans I have for you, ‘declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”.

It might be difficult to imagine ourselves to be full of hope. Some people are simply afraid to hope because they have experienced so much disappointment and don’t think they can face any more pain. Romans 15:13 says “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit”. God is the God of hope, and with Him it is never too late to start believing, hoping, and expecting.

Great Expectations

 Hope can be defined as ‘a favourable and confident expectation’. There are many times when we take a passive attitude in which we just ‘wait and see’ if something will change or happen for us. Our ‘che sara sara, whatever will be, will be’ attitude is one that does not place much hope in what God has for us. God wants us to expect, to be actively anticipating something good from Him.

When a woman is pregnant, we say that she is ‘expecting’. She is anticipating the child that is about to come. What are we seeing in our mind and imagination? How do we talk about our future? Do we wake up with anticipation that today might be the day that we receive our breakthrough? God has incredible plans for our lives, and He wants us to anticipate the good things that He has in store for us.

Maybe you might have endured a lot of pain and disappointment, and just can’t imagine for things to get better. While what you have gone through is real, and may have caused a lot of pain, know that the enemy works overtime to convince us that things will never change, and that there is no hope for the future. God wants you to know that He loves you, and you can trust Him to make a miracle out of your mess.

 

Prisoner of Hope

In Zechariah 9:12, the Lord says ‘Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope; even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you’.  What does it mean to be a prisoner of hope? I means that no matter what happens in our lives, we refuse to stop hoping and trusting in God’s ability to come through.

Many times, we want to wait until we feel optimistic or hopeful. Or we want to wait until we see a little bit of results before we start believing. However,  the truth is that when we make a solid decision to think positive, hopeful thoughts, our feelings will eventually catch up. The enemy might come against us with negative thoughts and place problems in our path, but when we make the choice to be determined to put all of our trust in God, be assured that God will always be there for us.

Hebrews 19: 6 says ‘We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure’. When you want a boat to stay in place, you drop the anchor. This verse says that hope is the anchor for the soul. Our soul comprises of our mind, our will, and our emotions. Our soul tells us what we think, what we want, and what we feel. This means that when everything looks awful and when things seem to be going horribly wrong, hope is the anchor that pulls us back and says “Hold on! God is still in control!”

Speak Life!

We may not realize it, but the words we speak set the course for our life. If you want to know what you will be like in five years, then just listen to the words that you are saying about yourself today. Our words are not just simply spoken thoughts – they have power. What we say has an impact on our lives and in what God can do for us, in us, and through us.  What is in our hearts will come out of our mouths, and it will either bring blessings or curses. When our words agree with God’s Word, we bring His power into our circumstances.

 

A Matter of Life and Death

Proverbs 18:21 says ‘The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.’ This verse describes words to be like seeds that produce fruit. We plant them into the spiritual realm when we speak, and they begin to grow. If we speak negatively, then they will produce negative fruit, and we will have negative life. However, if we speak positively, they will produce positive fruit, and we will enjoy a positive life. We ‘eat’ the life we speak with our words.

Words are note merely sounds that we make to communicate. Something we say may seem insignificant to you, but to someone else, those words can be life changing. When we use our words to lift someone’s spirit and to speak words of vision and life over them, you are depositing seeds that will last throughout eternity!

 

Your Words and Your Life

We might have hears the phrase “You’re going to eat those words!” While it may should like a mere phrase to us, in reality, we do eat our words. What we say do not only affect others, it also affects us. Words are wonderful when used in a proper way – they can encourage, edify and give confidence to the hearer.  A right word spoken at the right time can actually be life-changing (Proverbs 15:23). We can increase our own joy by speaking the right words. We can also upset ourselves by talking unnecessarily about our problems or things that have hurt us.

 

Plan to Say Something Positive

God has given His children a new nature, and we are taught to daily renew our mind and attitude – having a positive outlook on life and speaking positive words based on God’s Word is one of the things we can do to in this area. For example, saying ‘God will give me strength today to do whatever I need to do and to do it with joy’; as opposed to ‘I dread this day, I want to stay in bed’, will better prepare us for the day ahead.

Anyone who wants to be healthy is careful to choose healthy and nutritious food that will nourish the body. Many times we remember to do right by our physical bodies, and forget about our spirit. If we want to be healthy in our soul and spirit, we should also choose to take in words that will build us up, and increase our joy and peace.

 

Don’t Get Snared By Your Words

Proverbs 6:2 says “you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth”. Here is a clear example of how one can be snared by what they speak.

During the 1990’s, Jose Lima was the star pitcher for the Houston Astros. One season, he won 20 games and was considered one of the best pitchers in the league. When the Astros moved from the Astrodome to their new ballpark, the fence in the left field was much closer than the fence in the Astrodome. It favored the hitters and made it more difficult on the pitchers. The first time Jose Lima went to the new ballpark, he stood on the mound, looked at the fence, and the first words out of his mouth were “I’ll never be able to pitch in here. The fence is way too close.” Sure enough, he went from being a 20 game winner to a 16 game loser. It was one of the biggest negative turnarounds in the history of the Astros. What happened? He prophesied his future.

We need to be aware of what we are saying in order not to be snared by the words that we say. When negative thoughts come, do not speak them out. Instead, speak life, speak hope, speak blessing – speak what you want to see happen!

不要比较

当我们感到不安时,我们就会开始将自己与别人比较,总觉得自己应该‘跟得上’他们。我们尽量成为与别人一样,但事实上,每个人都是独一无二的,我们只能够成为那创造主所创造的样式。但这样并不是说我们不能在短处上更加地进步,而是我们需要了解到上帝创造我们每一个人都是独特的,祂让我们拥有不一样的性格和特质。

你的眼目在注视些什么?

很多时候,我们的眼目专注在自己的身上而不是神。我们看自己的软弱,而当我们越专注於自己的软弱时,我们就会越胆怯和害怕,渐渐地我们开始对自己说,‘每件事情都是非常困难完成‘、‘我们是不成气候的’。

有些人看着自己的软弱,然后在想,‘我不可能为神作成任何伟大的事的’。也有一些将眼目专注于自己的强处,‘我不需要帮助,我能够自己完成。’不管我们能否作成那些事,神都要我们将信心建立在祂里面,因为我们若离了祂,就什么都做不了!

大卫,就是一个很好的例子,他知道自己在基督里的身份。正当以色列军队害怕迎战歌利亚时,大卫勇敢地踏上战场并用他的弹弓将歌利亚击杀。他能作成这事全因他将眼目专注于神,而非在自己的身上。当我们在基督里认识自己时,我们也能够像大卫一样有自信。

神要我们刚强壮胆并相信祂会为我们成就大事。以弗所书3章20节告诉我们,‘愿荣耀归给神,就是归给那能照着运行在我们里面的大能,充充足足地成就一切,超过我们所求所想的。’

或许神正等候我们勇敢地踏出第一步,并且向祂呼求为我们成就那些超乎我们所求所想的事。我们心中的不安使我们认为自己根本不配得向神呼求,但是,千万别忘了,因着基督已为我们所成就的一切,让原本不配得的我们能够得着耶稣所配得的。

无论我们正处于跟随基督道路上的任何阶段,或是发生了什么事情,都要记得因着神的爱子,祂视我们为完全的。正因如此,我们得以抛下我们里面所有的不安,有信心地往前行。

囚犯… 盼望

‘证明给我看,我就相信!’这就是我们现今所生活的世代,就是一个眼见为凭的世代。有些时候,除非我们亲眼见证上帝的作为,否则要我们相信神会为我们成就某些事时,都会经历挣扎。然而,这并不是神工作的方式。不管我们看见或否,神依然在我们生命中运行。耶利米书29:11说,‘因我自己知道我为你们所定的计划,是使你们得平安,而不是遭受祸害的计划;要赐给你们美好的前程和盼望’。

要想象自己时常充满盼望,或许会有点困难。有些人害怕抱有希望,因为他们的过去的经历使他们认为希望越大,失望越大。罗马书15章13节这么说,‘愿那赐盼望的神,因着你们的信,把一切喜乐平安充满你们,使你们靠着圣灵的大能满有盼望’。神是赐盼望的神,因此,在祂里面开始相信、盼望和期待吧!因为那是永远都不会太迟的事。

希望,可以被理解为‘一种有利和自信的期待’。很多时候,我们都会抱着被动‘观望’的态度,看看是否会有事情发生在我们身上。我们‘无所谓啦,随便啊,什么都好’的态度就是一种没有把盼望放在神身上的表现。神要看见我们对祂有所期待,主动地渴望从祂那里领受祝福。

当一位妇人怀孕时,我们会说她正‘待产’,她期待孩子的到来。我们在自己的想象中看见怎样的画面呢?我们是怎样看见自己的未来呢?我们今天早上起床的时候,是否期待今天或许会经历一个新的突破呢?神已经赐给了我们的生命一个奇妙的计划,而且祂盼望看见我们期待从祂那里领受那些原先已为我们预备好的祝福。

你的生命中可能曾经历许多的痛苦和失望,甚至已经看不见那摆在我们眼前的希望。尽管你所经历的一切都是真实发生的,也可能在你的生命中造成了许多的伤害和痛苦,但是要知道,仇敌千方百计要迷惑我们,告诉我们环境和事物都不会有任何改变的谎言。可是,神要告诉你,祂爱你,你可以信靠祂,因为祂要将你的逆境变为祝福和奇迹。

 

盼望的囚犯

撒迦利亚书 9章12节记载了,‘你们被囚仍有盼望的人哪!要归回保障。今天我要宣告:我必加倍补偿给你’。盼望的囚犯到底是什么呢?我所说的意思是,无论发生什么事,我们要停止逃避,并信靠神有能力带领我们胜过。

很多时候,我们想要等到自己变得乐观或是有盼望起来;或许我们想等到见证一些成绩才开始相信。无论如何,事实上当我们下定决心开始往正面积极的方向去思考时,希望和我们的感受自然而然会有所改变。仇敌可能会以负面的思想和摆放些难题给我们,但是当我们决定全心信靠神的时候,神必然会与我们同在。

St Luke to host Inaugural Gempuru Besai

After the successful runs of the previous Gempuru Besai in the state, Sri Aman will be hosting the first Gempuru Besai Gerija Anglika at St Luke’s Church on March 28-29, 2014.

The speakers for the event will be the Archbishop of the Anglican Province of South East Asia and the Bishop of Kuching, the Most Reverend Datuk Bolly Lapok and Assistant Bishop of Kuching, the Right Reverend Aeries Sumping Jingan.

The theme of the inaugural gathering of Iban-speaking Anglicans is taken from Matthew 11:28, “Come to Me.”

 

 

According to the chairmen’s message, the Gempuru Besai Gerija Anglika is organized by Archdeaconry Lower South Sarawak and Central Sarawak. The chairmen are the Venerable Canon Chimbi Bunsie and Venerable Canon Nelson Ugas. This event covers the entire state of Sarawak and Brunei Darussalam.

“Previously, there had been other gempuru besai organized,” they stated. “And many of us have participated in these events.”

“In addition to this, things that have happened in our country now may have shaken our faith but with this gathering, the committee hoped to strengthen the faith of the people.  We need to know the truth about things that are happening and things to come.”

Last year, the gempuru besai at the Borneo Convention Centre saw thousands of Christians from various Gempuru Besai zones including Kuching-Samarahan, Sri Aman-Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri. Christians from all over the world also joined the gathering including those from Australia, China, Mongolia, Solomon Islands, Thailand, Indonesia, Korea, Taiwan, Philippines, Canada, and Singapore.

 

 

The year 2013 was the 16th meeting since it was first held at the Pan Borneo Convention, Sibu. The gathering is aimed to bring different levels of impact to the Iban-speaking community. Ps Greman Ujang Slat, Ps Tunggi Balan and other leaders founded the event with a vision to bring all the Iban-speaking people together and worship the King of Kings. The gempuru besai is an inter-denominational event with a mission to reach, touch and change the lives of the people and nation.

The organizers for the next event in Sri Aman are praying for the support from all parishes including the Diocese of Kuching, Sarawak and Brunei Darussalam. The gathering is conducted in Bahasa Iban.

Bringing the Grace and Love of God to Ipoh

Almost every Christian, at least within the Klang Valley, would know about the Dream Center in PJ headed by Pr Daniel Ho and have the utmost regard for it. But do you know that there’s also a Dream Center in Ipoh? Dream Center Ipoh, is a English-Chinese bilingual worship service that meets fortnightly at YMCA Ipoh. It is steer-headed by bro Philip Loh, a man who ministers from his direct experiences and who works along with the Spirit.

 

 

In last Sunday’s service, Philip Loh shared a personal testimony before giving his message. He shared about a young man that came from a very traditional family, who had parents who found it very difficult to come to the Lord.  He prayed for many years, right until the day his father was in a coma and this young man thought that it was the end for his dad. He continued persisting in prayer through 3 hours of his dad’s coma, and a miracle happened. The dad woke from the coma, and restored his relationship with God not long after that. Not only that, as He did with King Hezekiah in 2 Kings 20:4-6, God gracefully extended the dad’s life for another 4 years, and after another 17 years from his dad’s salvation, the young man’s mother also restored her relationship with the Lord. All together, it took 31 years of persistent prayer for this breakthrough.

This experience taught Philip 2 things about the Grace of God. In the first instance, God showed Himself as a God of 2nd Chances, and through the second instance, God showed Himself as a God of ‘More Than Enough’. This was the theme of the message shared by bro Philip, taking the example from the text of Acts 3:1-10.        

Acts 3:1-10 is where the well-known event of Peter healing the lame beggar is, but there is more significance to the event than that. It also tells us some things about God. Firstly, He is a God of ‘More Than Enough’.  The beggar asked merely for money, and Philip shared that the beggar may not have even recognized Peter. God appointed Peter to meet the beggar’s needs at the moment, but not through mere alms. God gave the lame man what he really needed and more than what he asked for. God restored the strength in his legs.

One of the notable things we notice is that Peter just spoke through his authority given by God (Acts 3:6-7). There is power in the name of Jesus of Nazareth, and this power comes through our Identity in Christ. Philippians 2:10 saysthat at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth’. How much do we recognize Christ’s role in our lives and our Christian identity? How large are our dreams for God and dare we ask God for more? 

 

Acts 3:6-7

Then Peter said, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk.” Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong.

Acts 3:1-10 does not just show God as the God of ‘more than enough’; it also shows Him as a God of 2nd chances.  Acts 3:2 tells us that the beggar had been lame from birth, and that he had to be carried daily to the Temple gates in order to earn some alms for his living. Putting ourselves in the beggar’s position, we can imagine that he must have lost the joy and hope in life.

Perhaps his friends had also grown tired of the chore of taking care of him. The beggar wasn’t blind or deaf. He would have heard the stories about Jesus or even seen Jesus when He entered into Jerusalem not long before Peter came along. Why didn’t he ask Jesus for healing? Perhaps his perspective had been limited by the stresses of his life, perhaps he had doubts, or perhaps he had totally given up hope. Hearing of the news of the crucifixion of Christ must have compounded his hopelessness. Even if he heard of the Resurrection of Christ, Jesus had ascended up to Heaven after 40 days, and here he was, perhaps feeling this time all hope has definitely passed.

Now a man who was lame from birth was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful, where he was put every day to beg from those going into the temple courts.

 

Yet, right at the unexpected moment of life, Jesus gave him a second chance. Throughout the Bible, God has shown Himself as merciful and full of Grace. In the examples of Saul, the persecutor of Christians who became Paul, the great apostle of God, and in Peter, the man who denied Jesus 3 times who later became a great leader in the Early Church. Even in the Old Testament, God gave second chances to Gideon who tested God more than once and to Jonah who fled instead of obeying God. Many things in life, there are no second chances. Things that are broken cannot be mended. For example, you cannot redo failed exams; you either have to repeat the semester or you fail outright. Road accidents, etc cannot be undone.

Life ruined through mistakes seems to have no 2nd chances. Do we bow to pressures in life and resort to means like lying in order to get ourselves out of trouble, pornography to relieve ourselves of our loneliness, or to other kinds of addiction in our times of stress? Most of these will only land up with us digging deeper and deeper holes for ourselves. Only Christ can and has come to give broken lives like these second chances while we’re still living in a Time of Grace.  The service ended with an altar call ministry and fellowship over some refreshments.

 

 

 

Philip shared in a briefing with the leaders of Dream Center Ipoh that what matters is not how big a church is, but how solid is the foundation it is set in. A strong and effective church is not grounded on the efforts of men but on the Identity of Christ, for the Church is not about us, it is about God. Bro Philip shared from his heart that if we have the right focus in ministry, God will bring the harvest in. He holds every newcomer to Dream Center Ipoh, every new believer, and every transformed life, to be directed and appointed by God. If a church is focused towards serving God rather than winning earthly glory, it will grow naturally.

 

Dream Center Ipoh meets every second Sunday morning (2,16,30 March; 13,27 April; 11,25 May; 8,22 June  ), 10am-12pm at YMCA Ipoh. The service is held bilingually, in English with a Chinese translator, and a Children’s Church Service is held concurrently. Pr Daniel Ho will be speaking at the service on 2nd March 2014.

A Long Time ago in the Galaxies and Creation: Part 2

Most people are familiar that stars and planets are very different celestial bodies. On the one hand, stars shine and give out light, but planets do not. Planets can only reflect the light of stars, and thankfully, are often cool enough for matter to harden as solids. So, there is the wonder how planets like earth are so different from the stars.

When we look up to the skies at night, planets like Venus and Mercury are clearly seen. They reflect the light from the sun, just like the moon. However, their paths in the skies are irregular, for they ‘wander’ in the heavens.

Thus the ancient references to planets are as ‘wandering stars’. Jude the Lord’s brother, warned Christians about evil men who were wild waves of the seas, wandering stars in Jude 13. Thus planets are not described favourably as stars for this purpose.

 

 

The Formation of Elements of Matter

However, planets tell us an important story. It is because planets have heavier elements of matter, unlike stars which contain significant amounts of hydrogen from gravitational attraction, “from the gathering of the waters” in the universe.

Thus, when we look at how planets have heavier elements, we are looking at how stars lead to this formation. If matter does not contain elements like carbon, oxygen, then we will never have life on earth.

In background, this has to do with stars giving light. The light comes from the nuclear fusion of hydrogen ions (that is, protons) and the “waste” end product is helium ions (that is, alpha particles).

If stars can only do this, then we end up producing only helium in nuclear combustion. We won’t have any planet. Something must happen to form elements from helium. Relativistic quantum theory therefore provides an answer for this beginning.

Hans Bethe, among others, contributed to our understanding of aspects of the stars’ part in energy production from nuclear fusion (Bethe’s Nobel Prize for 1967).

One important aspect that Bethe showed is the role for carbon.

Bethe’s catalytic carbon cycle proposal (in nuclear fusion known as the CNO cycle, which stands for carbon nitrogen oxygen) is a key alternate route for nuclear fusion — apart from standard “chain reaction” of hydrogen ions.

Carbon is not consumed as it is a catalyst in this nuclear fusion. Nonetheless, the “waste” product of hydrogen fusion is still helium.

This helium later fused and formed more carbon. Why this happened is important. It is because this helium fusing to form carbon should not happen — that is, it cannot happen unless a miracle takes place.

 

The Miracle of Carbon Formation

Fred Hoyle was an ardent scientist who supported the steady static universe concept. He did not expect this helium conversion to carbon, unless the reaction can miraculously produce more “stable” products.

Holye was hoping this cannot happen — but his data showed carbon’ internal energy levels were actually lower, so the reaction must occur. Fred Hoyle was totally taken aback by the experimental data. This should never happen, except as a miracle!

The result means that heavier elements do form. Carbon formation by stars defied logical concepts to explain how this universe should happen. Stephen Hawking stated that had the strong nuclear force been stronger by just 0.5%, no carbon would form, and consequently, no life is possible.

Without carbon, no life is possible. In a simplistic statement, without the CNO cycle and carbon fusion, we won’t be here.

So it is written: And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” Genesis 1:9,10.

 

 

Early Massive Stars and Later Stars

Nevertheless, the long time that was taken to form our sun raises another puzzle that also needs to be resolved. We know, in the early universe, elementary particles were closer together because the size of the universe was small. Naturally, we must expect that stars should have formed more easily due to this close proximity through stronger gravity. This is true.

However, this stronger gravitational attraction also resulted in larger masses of particles gathered, and the gravitational collapse would ignite and form more massive stars. Such early massive stars did form in the universe.

They tended to burn faster and also to explode due to intense internal heat. Most of these early massive stars did not survive. In the process of dying, these stars gave birth to matter of heavier elements due to fusion of matter.

The debris and remnants of these dying massive stars in time regrouped to form a newer generation of waters with stars. As a result, galaxies were formed in this 2nd generation. The clouds of these waters in the heavens begin to have heavier elements. Our Milky Way and other galaxies developed from these early massive stars.

 

 

The Sun and a Third Generation of Stars

Through this process of star formation, some stars in our Milky Way galaxy likewise were also too massive. These 2nd generation massive stars in many galaxies exploded in a phenomenon we see as the supernova. We can sometimes see such a supernova event in the skies even today.

Over time, remnants of the supernova stars led to a new 3rd generation cloud of particles to gather together in some parts of our Milky Way also. This newer 3rd generation cloud had higher density of heavy elements such as we know in our solar system.  Our solar system and sun is a 3rd generation in formation of matter in the universe.

From our present knowledge, our sun is believed to be ignited and began to shine some nine billions years after the primordial light event. From present day, this was some four to five billion years ago.

 

 

The Greater and Lesser Lights

Before closing this consideration about the waters above the skies, I must wonder about the sun and moon that shine.

The gathering of “the waters above the skies” took a lengthy time after the “primordial light” event. Consequently, this starlight that we know was formed in a continual process, and therefore Scripture does not speak of time in Creation. Instead Scripture only tells us that “and there was light”

Scripture also gives us this revelation in relation to God’s purpose in Creation for the earth. It does not state the time when the sun, the moon, and stars were formed, since every celestial body would be formed in God’s time. Thus we do not conclude the sun, moon and stars were “made” only on some specific day in Creation.

It is thus important that we do not seek to catalogue and define God’s Creation solely as a sequence in time. This idea of time is man-made because God did not state time in Creation in Genesis. It is because time is relative.

We may ask, then, what was God’s purpose when Scripture describes the greater and lesser lights?

 

 

Signs and Seasons

So it is written: And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on earth.” And it was so. Genesis 1:1, 15

As we know, the moon took a different time to form compared to the time the sun was formed. The stars also took different time periods to form. Here, we are given to know Genesis’ account with God’s purpose for earth in Creation.

Therefore, in Genesis, the greater and lesser lights reveal roles in relation to the earth. It is about the marking and calibration of day and night, so that we have a means to determine the passage of time, to be signs to mark the seasons and days and years.

The greater and lesser lights were in God’s purpose for earth, as our sun and moon to regulate our day and night, and to give seasons.  Thus the Genesis account has an important focus on earth for in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. It is not focused on time as we might expect.

So it is written in God’s promise to Noah after the Flood: “While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night, shall never cease.” Genesis 8:22.

Sometimes, singles will do just about anything to get close to someone they find interesting, intriguing or just plain irresistible.

One single woman I know drives through Starbucks daily to get her dose of caffeine. One morning as she approached the speaker to order, she noticed that the man in the truck in front of her looked very attractive. She eyed him through his rear view mirror. Wow! Handsome! Hmmm. . . I wonder if he's single. In a split second she made a plan.

"Hi. Welcome to Starbucks. What can I get started for you today?"

"Well to start, can you do something for me? Will you ask the guy in front of me if he's available?"

"You mean the guy in the truck? Suuuuuure. I'd love to. What else can I do for you?"

After she ordered her half-pump, no whip, soy, Venti mocha, she laughed at herself and thought, What in the world have I done?

She blushed as the hunky man in the truck pulled to the drive-up window. She watched as Ms. Starbucks asked if he was available. And then, in a flash, she watched as he drove away.

When she got to the window, she learned through Ms. Starbucks' giggles that he was indeed, attached, married even.

Sometimes singles—and everyone else on the planet—will go to great lengths and even make complete fools of themselves to get close to the opposite sex.

Why? Is it because our innate desire for sex? Is it because of loneliness? Desperation? Stupidity? Hormones? Of course, it can be all of the above, but the answer I'd like to focus on is: intimacy.

The human desire for intimacy, for love, drives us to do things that we never thought we would. But why, and what does it mean to be intimate?

 

Being Intimate Means "In-to-Me-See"

One evening over dinner with a friend, we spoke about intimacy and what it means. She shared a cute little phrase with me to remind me of intimacy's true meaning. "It means ‘in-to-me-see,'" she said. Ah yes, it's a blending of our heart with another's, so we can "see into" who they really are, and they can "see into" us.

According to Dictionary.com, intimacy is defined as, "showing a close union or combination of particles or elements: an intimate mixture."

Being intimate involves the mixing of our life with another's, a mingling of souls, a sharing of hearts. This is something we all long for because it's how God made us. We were designed to connect.

 

Real Intimacy is More Than Sex

Maybe you are wondering about sex. Granted, sex is a part of intimate expression, but it is not intimacy.

In his book, Soul Cravings, Erwin Raphael McManus writes:

"Sex can be the most intimate and beautiful expression of love, but we are only lying to ourselves when we act as if sex is proof of love. Too many men demand sex as proof of love; too many women have given sex in hopes of love. We live in a world of users where we abuse each other to dull the pain of aloneness. We all long for intimacy, and physical contact can appear as intimacy, at least for a moment."

When Janet married David, she was convinced that even though they were not emotionally close before getting married, that sex would change all that. After all, she'd seen the movies; she had watched television where two hearts blended into one once they became sexually involved. Sadly, she was heartbroken when the emotional connectedness she longed for didn't show up after she made it to bed.

Real intimacy is not found just by merging bodies in sex. When Jesus said, "and the two shall become one. . . " I can't help but think that He meant more than just the physical. After all, how many couples go to bed at night, share their bodies, but not their hearts? Undoubtedly, many of these people would say they are very lonely. Why? Because just as a garden hose is not the source of water, but only an expression, or vehicle for it, so sex is not the source of intimacy, but an outlet (or expression of) it. No matter how hard you try, if real emotional and spiritual intimacy does not exist before sex, it most certainly won't after.

 

Real Intimacy Makes Us Feel Known

Real intimacy makes us feel alive like we've been found, as if someone finally took the time to peer into the depths of our soul and really see us there. Until then, until we experience true intimacy, we will feel passed over and ignored, like someone is looking right through us. 

Sadly, we can miss out on intimacy that can make us and another person feel known, when we predetermine what we think we should see when we examine their life, heart, personality and soul. When this happens, we will try to mould and make them into who we believe they should be. As a result, we are blinded to their good qualities and love and intimacy are destroyed.

Many years ago, when I dated a young man, my mentor told me, "Shana, if you focus on all that he is not, you'll miss what he is." I've since learned that when we ignore another person's beauty and all that God made them to be, intimacy is lost. Why? Because intimacy flows out of feeling wholly accepted just the way we are.

 

Real Intimacy Begins With You

Perhaps you are wondering how you can build an intimate relationship. In addition to accepting another person just how they are, (Note: This doesn't mean accepting any form of abuse), real intimacy can only begin once you know yourself. Since intimacy means "in-to-me-see," how can anyone "see into" you and who you are your fears, dreams, hopes and desires unless you know who you are and are willing to allow someone in? Experiencing true intimacy begins with being connected to your own heart.

Granted, sharing who we are with others is often not easy. All love is a risk. I admit, it can be uncomfortable exposing the deepest parts of ourselves. Thankfully, you don't have to do it all at once because developing intimacy is like peeling an onion—it can happen just a little at a time while trust is developed.

 

Intimacy With God is Real and Rewarding

Because God made us, He intimately knows us better than anyone can. For this reason, He can make us feel known in a way that no one on earth is able; and in this we can experience intimacy in an indescribable way. Intimacy with God through His Son Jesus has been the most rewarding and life-changing thing I have ever experienced.

My prayer is that you will first experience the joy that comes from having an intimate relationship with God and that out of that love you have experienced with Him, that you will find intimacy with a special someone who will make the load of walking the earth a little lighter.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for THIS IS RIGHT.  Honor your father and mother – which is the first commandment with a promise –THAT IT MAY GO WELL WITH YOU and that you may ENJOY LONG LIFE ON THE EARTH!

 

It is in God’s plan for children to be always receptive and listening to caring elders in charge of you.  Ephesians 6: 1-3 in the Bible is especially written to children about God’s instructions.  It tells them about their role to parents.  God tells children to: -

 

Obey your parents and Honour your parents.

He tells children plainly why you must obey your parents because – this is right and why you must honor your parents because He promises – that it may go well with you and you may enjoy long life on the Earth!  Ponder over the amazing truth of these two instructions and the rewards that God promises that comes with them.  He has always proven to us to be an incredible God!  The first reward for obeying parents is: -

 

This is right!

 

What kind of attractive reward is that?  It is certainly not very much of a reward!  If you repeatedly say it, its implication will slowly sink in that it is actually quite big deal.  Doing the right things to please your parents is a natural response by a happy child who has loving and caring parents.  Children even at a very young age feel loved, encouraged and strengthened every time they receive a happy response from parents such as a smile, nod or a touch or a verbal ‘thank you sweetie’.  These kids will always have a lasting close relationship with their parents and their siblings and grow up with high esteem.

The second reward for honoring parents is: -

 

That it may go well with you AND

You may enjoy long life on the earth (!)

 

Now these are incredible promises, and our Creator is the only One who could truly fulfill them!  To honour our parents is the first commandment with a promise of a reward!  ‘That it may go well’ can be interpreted as having good health and happiness.  It is everyone’s life desire to enjoy and be reminded that he/she is a picture of good health.  I recall my dear mother (we are Hokkien) refers to good health as having ‘Ang Geh’, which literally means showing ‘red teeth’!  I think she probably implies that the healthy person displays a set of red gums (because of good blood circulation) rather than actual red-stained teeth!  

To live a long life naturally follows one's good health.  Longevity is such an important asset in anyone’s life.  It is everyone’s heart desire to live long lives so that they are able to share and enjoy their later years with their children and grandchildren.  We all try to achieve long lives by ourselves; we ensure that we eat the right food, exercise, sleep well and go for regular medical checkups etc.  Our own way of achieving long life may not always work but be absolutely sure that’s God’s way, like everything that He promises, never fail!

Is Ephesians 6: 1-3 true for you?  It is directing at children, but can it also apply appropriately to grown-ups like you and me?  Let us wind back the clock.  As children, did you think you would qualify?  When you realized that you were close and strong in Him ever since you were young and had remained faithful throughout the years, and everything else had always been right with your life, then your answer is fairly obvious.  Be blessed and be thankful that you have God-fearing parents who brought you up.  You have, like what your parents did for you, in turn brought your children up to fear and obey God.  Do you think that your own children have in turn emulated their parents in bringing up their own children?  You have done your part to love them and care for them and are the rest really much up to them?  When we frequently pray for them, we can always rest assured that the Lord knows our hearts desire for our children and the Lord truly cares.

There are many occasions in the Bible that demonstrated that God has established His covenant with our forefathers.  In Genesis 17:7, we read: 

 

I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. 

 

And again in Psalm 100:5, we read: 

 

For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. 

 

Let us all take heart when we remind ourselves of the special day with great joy (with the angels in Heaven) when we made a decision in our lives to accept Jesus as savior and Lord.  We can now rest assured in all the things we live and do in the future because our loving Heavenly Father is always in control.  We have a loving God who cares and is absolutely trustworthy to all His promises.  This is not saying the least that our lives will be rosy from now on.  On the contrary!  The big difference now is we have God and we can rely on His strength rather than our own!  We can always be confident as we are reminded when we read in Nehemiah 8:10b. 

 

Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.
