Pastor Philip Mantofa Who Ministered to 46 AirAsia Victims Sees Vision of Heaven after Plane Crash

Mawar Sharon megachurch in Surabaya, Indonesia lost 46 members in the AirAsia Flight QZ8501 crash late last year. The church’s pastor, Pastor Philip Mantofa, recently opened up about how his church, and his faith in God, have strengthened through the tragedy.

“Our church has always been like a big family,” the pastor explained in an interview with Charisma News.

“Even though not everyone necessarily knows everyone, our sense of belonging as one body of Christ is strong since most of our members belong in small groups and ministries.”

In late December, Flight QZ8501 disappeared about one hour into its journey to Singapore from Surabaya while flying over the Java Sea. Officials lost contact as the plane travelled between Belitung and Kalimantan, Indonesia with 162 people on board. Days later, wreckage and bodies–one fourth of which were members of Mawar Sharon– were recovered.

“No words can describe the feeling of loss we have all experienced here, especially the passengers’ families,” the pastor recalled. “Unnecessary comments haven’t help a bit, and we don’t attempt to answer the big “WHY” question. However, the Holy Spirit has been real in our church as the Comforter. As their pastor, I must say that I couldn’t be prouder of my members as they carried each other’s burden without second thoughts. The most glorious moment was when I witnessed how one bereaved family encouraged and prayed for another out of their own initiative. I could say that I almost saw heaven in that situation. Yes, we are moving forward!”

Although devastated, Pastor Mantofa says his Christian faith has grown stronger through the tragedy, as it has forced him to completely rely on God.

Chang Woon Bing, speaker of the recent Art Sowers talk in DUMC and lecturer of The One Academy shared how he started his passion in art. While his father studied for his Masters in Montreal, Canada, three-year-old Woon Bing would spend his days observing his environment and recording them down like a diary.

“A lot of people are in this industry because they are inspired by what they see out there, like the films by Disney, Pixar, and other comic books. But as I reflect back, when it first started, I recorded experiences and things I saw.

“As a three-year-old, I see a merry-go-round, and I go home and draw a merry-go-round. I see what’s on TV and in storybooks, and I just draw. It started out as sort of a diary that records the thoughts and I am having, and it is still true for now,” said Woon Bing.

The world has enough negativity and bad news that Christian artists hold the power to reveal and spread messages of love, peace, and goodness in this world.

Dr Christopher Yuan Coming to Share His Inspiring Story in March

We are born-again Spirit-activated people of God. We have been made alive through the death of Jesus on the cross. Therefore we are to live consistent to who we are in Christ!

The born-again spirit in us is a powerful element that controls the soul and the body in us. We need to be seriously sensitive to how we think because the way you think will determine your spiritual attitude. If you unconsciously go back and allow your feelings to control your spiritual attitude then you will be heading for trouble. The spirit in us is in absolute control of our feelings. Our protection and wellbeing is the consciousness of your born-again spirit in you which controls everything including our faith we walk in everyday.

Faith does not follow your feeling but your feelings will follow your faith.

When you are able to see God in your circumstances you will find victory in every encounter you face in life.

 

God will make a way where there seems to be no way.

When the Isralietes were about to possess the promised land Joshua and Caleb  alone saw God in their circumstances whereas the 10 others spies saw a different picture of  fear that crippled them into a grasshopper mentality which defeated them from moving forward. You will not be defeated when you see God in the midst of your circumstances.

It’s not by might nor by power but by my spirit says The Lord.

 

Change your thinking and you will change your life! You have the ability within you through the enabling power of the Holy Spirit to transform every situation that confronts you in your life. No matter how hopeless or helpless a crisis may appear, you can either view that problem negatively or positively. You have a choice to trust your crisis to the supernatural miracle-working God; the promise-keeping God who can turn your impossible situation around into a miracle, or you can trust your crisis to your own limited ability and drain yourself up, by struggling through and getting nowhere.

However, having said all that, when you and I are suddenly faced with a crisis, the spiritual atmosphere changes with most of us at least. It’s o.k. to praise God and boast of all His goodness and mercy when everything is flowing smoothly for you but it’s quite a different matter when you are faced with a serious situation.  When our faith is severely tested, how often do we find times when we become so depleted and weak that someone steps in taking control of your situation?  You feel that you are no longer in control of the situation and you feel that you are losing all balance and direction to your destiny. You are just hanging there hopeless and helpless.

 

FEAR WILL CRIPLE YOU

You will notice one common scenario! That all of us will be confronted instantly and that   is an experience of “FEAR.” Fear is a perverted tool of the enemy. Fear is the first weapon the enemy will use to demoralize you!  FEAR will FREEZE you in such a situation. You will not know what to do and how to do and how to solve your problem in such a situation. Because FEAR will affect your mental equilibrium and you will no longer be able to think straight anymore.

 

Paul is reminding us very clearly in Rom.12:2:

“Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

 

You become a conformer when you have no control over your life. HOW DO YOU DEFINE A CONFORMER? People who compromise the standards, values, virtues, morals and principles laid down in God’s word. One who has developed a poor measurement of the Kingdom of God.

 

2 Timothy 3:5

…..having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

 

A transformer on the other hand renews his mind with God’s word daily. He allows God to speak into his life about His goodness and mercy and he flows in the purpose and plan of God. Such is a person who can hear from God and who is in absolute confidence of who is in control of his life. You got to pluck into the word of God and study what the word says about you and when you behold the word, the Holy Spirit will do his work of transforming you into the image of his glory.

If you don’t get into God’s word the world will get into you. The world will seduce you into a mindset of thinking that it’s o.k to flow with it. A thinking pattern that is not in line with God’s word.  You either grow into the image of God or you grow into the image of the world.

 

 IF YOU GROW INTO THE IMAGE OF THE WORLD: this is what will happen to you.

 

It will seduce you into thinking that gay lifestyle is o.k. It will seduce you into thinking that same sex marriage is o.k.! It will seduce you into thinking that living out of wedlock is o.k. It will seduce you into thinking that you don’t need God to drive your life! You will be seduced into thinking that in the name of freedom just keep doing what you feel is good for you.  This is what the world is selling us by and large today. Can anybody ever understand what is the world today?

 

WRONG TEACHING

The world tries to infiltrate and conquer us with knowledge and intelligence. This is what the new-age gurus are doing right now all over the world. They use intelligence and knowledge to conquer and influence people.

When you are exposed and bombarded by this garbage constantly and you hear and see all this big guys in the limelight and the media of the world making statements against the word of God and ridiculing God. Undoing every moral standard that God has established from the very beginning for mankind. You better watch out; no sooner after that you will be subtly drawn away by this demonic thinking that will trap you into their philosophy and subsequently cut you off from God.

Jesus said:

I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. (John 15:5).

 

How long does it take a branch to die when it is cut off from the root?

The question is who is influencing you in your thinking. Is your thinking measured by the word of a God or is it influenced by the philosophies of this world?

The Math and Music of Communication

Is effective communication in marriage an art or a science? The correct answer is yes, and that’s not just a politically response.

 

Turn down the noise

It’s important for couples to understand that effective communication in marriage has a mathematical side. In any conversation, there is, of course, a sender, a receiver and a message. But often – just like in a bad phone or Internet connection – there can be a lot of static or noise interference.

Noise can be created by disturbances in our physical surroundings – blaring TV, phone ringing, dog barking. Couples seeking to improve their communication process should remove any physical noise factors, find a quiet place away from disturbances, and then begin sending and receiving the message.

A good habit for couples to embrace is finding a quiet place in the house where you can have an uninterrupted conversation for at least 10 minutes. This simple daily ritual can reap great dividends in marital understanding and satisfaction.

But noise can also be created by our own poor communication habits or quirks. Perhaps we speak in vague terms instead of being precise. Perhaps we intimidate our partner by raising the volume level. Oftentimes we are not even aware of how we may be creating noise in our attempt at conversation. Couples should identify communication patterns that hinder, rather than help, conversations and then try to hold each other accountable to not engaging in those negative default behaviours.

 

The art of communication

But good communication is also an art, isn’t it? Like good music, it requires sensitivity to melody, rhythm and harmony.

Couples who enjoy effective communication try to “sing” a strong melody by saying what they mean, and meaning what they say.

They also try to stay in good rhythm with each other. When a conversation ventures into the realm of emotion, they know how to slow the tempo down and avoid rushing.

Good conversations also require couples to work in harmony by observing body language and tone.

Do our conversations build up our spouse or tear them down? How would you assess your communication as a couple? It’s important to address both the math and music of communication. When we talk clearly and listen well, it results in knowing and being known, and this is the true reward of healthy communication.

Quiet Confidence

It is in stillness and trust that we draw strength to face life’s challenges.

Confronted by its enemies, Judah could have followed God’s prophetic word to the nation but it did not:

 

In returning and rest you shall be saved;

In quietness and confidence shall be your strength.

But you would not.

(Isaiah 30:15)

 

Instead of trusting in the invisible God to deliver it from its enemies, Judah sought help from Egypt. Judah trusted in war horses through its alliance with Egypt.

Similarly, it may be difficult for believers to trust God when going through adversity. Some prefer to seek help from people and tangible things rather than seek God. They would rather put their trust in chariots and horses than divine intervention (Psalm 20:7).

In our modern-day context, what are some examples of “horses and chariots”? Human ingenuity, wealth, physical strength, power and fame.

Because Judah had a DIY (do it yourself) mentality instead of relying on God, it will come to ruin. Judah will be defeated by its enemies despite its alliance with Egypt (Isaiah 30:1-3).

 

Now let us delve into the key verse above:

In returning and rest you shall be saved;

In quietness and confidence shall be your strength.

What does it mean to ‘return’?

 

It means to repent, turn away from our sins and selfish pursuits. We cannot have our cake and eat it. We cannot expect God to help us if we persist in our sinful ways.

What does it mean to ‘rest’?

It means to lean on God alone, find strength and comfort in Him (Isaiah 40:31). Do not fret. Cease from strife and useless activity. It means we acknowledge God in all of plans; stop conceiving and carrying out our own plans (Proverbs 3:5-6).

What does it mean to have ‘quiet confidence’ in God?

It means seeking God, being still before Him, trusting that He is in absolute control of our circumstances and that, in due time, He will deliver us (Isaiah 49:23).

It is having the confidence that when we pass though the waters, He will be with us (Isaiah 43:2).

It implies we are not fearful or dismayed because we trust that God will deliver us (Isaiah 41:10).

Believers who find strength in God amid adversity may experience God’s intervention—when He turns our weeping into joy (Psalm 84:5).

For God can make a way in the wilderness. He can even cause rivers to flow through the desert (Isaiah 48: 21).

Do we prefer our own way of overcoming crisis—My Way, as the song goes?  *

Or, do we believe, as the song goes, God Will Make A Way?  **

Kick-off Launch of the Emerging Leaders Mentoring Program

On 18th of January, the Emerging Leaders Mentoring Program, also known as M2, was kicked off at D’Fong Restaurant. 

As a brainchild of young professionals Jason Lee and Alex Tung, sponsored by the Full Gospel Businessmen Malaysia Fellowship (FGBMF), this program seeks to provide a mentoring platform for young Christian men and women to deal with issues in their workplace, help them live out their Christian faith and to be a salt and light to the world. The program pairs up teams of young Christian men and women (mentees) with mature Christian individuals who are successful in their respective careers (mentors). This year was the first time the women’s version of the program was introduced. Hence, unlike previous editions, there was a blend of businessmen and businesswomen at the launch.

The lineup of mentors for the 2015 edition includes:

  • Henry Eliathamby – Founder and COO of Tootpay Sdn Bhd, the largest and most secure Mobile Payment Services provider in South East Asia.
  • Rick Loh – CEO of NW Solutions (M) Sdn Bhd, a company providing business solutions to large corporations in Malaysia.
  • Lai Tak Ming – Director, Group HR and Admin of Public Listed Infrastructure and Property Group.
  • Michael Ong – Retired vice president of business development of a local private university.
  • Peggy Wong – Global entrepreneur extraordinaire.
  • Christina Yong – Chief Marketing Officer, Marketing Director of a multinational FMCG company.

Each mentor was assigned to between three to four mentees. The program would last for six months where mentor and mentees would meet for monthly meetings. The meetings will be chaired by one of the mentees on a rotation basis and the mentors would provide guidance and input in the discussions on challenges faced by the mentees in their daily Christian walk. The core theme of discussions revolves around leadership but would also cover issues such as money, sex, power, etc. Each mentor-mentee group will then be required to produce a write-up of their experiences and take-away from the program, which would be handed to the organizing committee at the end of the six-month stint.

Back at the launch, the chairperson of the night, Jason Lee, kicked off the event by introducing the program and its core values and vision. A sumptuous dinner courtesy of FGBMF was served as the participants mingled around gleefully with fellow mentees and mentors at their respective tables.

Halfway through, the chairperson got the mentors to make a brief introduction about themselves. Many of them expressed their heart’s desire to pass on the baton (experiences and words of wisdom) to the next generation of young working adults. Many mentees felt truly humbled and filled with a sense of immense gratitude towards the mentors’ willingness to sacrifice their time and energy in mentoring their respective mentees.

Next was the mentees’ turn to be in the spotlight. Some mentees volunteered to share their thoughts on this program, their hopes, their excitement, and their expectations. They shared heartwarming testimonies about God answered their desperate prayers for mentors to guide them through their participation in the program. This was followed by testimonies from mentees who were in the program the previous year. The present batch were all encouraged by the experiences and testimonies of the alumni of the program.

Towards the end of the launch, the chairperson closed with a sharing of a verse which summed up the heart of the program: “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17). With this take home value for the night, the launch ended with fellow participants exchanging contacts and bidding their farewells, all looking forward with excitement to the start of a journey that would reshape their walk with Christ.

Trusting God when Trusting isn’t Easy

Somehow or rather, everyone has trust issues, whether it is minor or major. Nevertheless, studies have shown that people who are more religiously involved, have a better ability to trust others while people who are more theologically conservative tend to trust less. Despite those facts, we cannot be fully certain that those who are actively involved in religious movements have more trust. The topic of trust is indeed complicated. All in all, do we really trust anyone in this world? The Bible tells us that there is no person in this world as perfect as Jesus Christ and no better person to trust than Him. (Romans 3:12; Psalms 118:8-9)

 

All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one. (Romans 3:12)

Christ said that He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. If Christ is the Truth, then it follows that Christ cannot lie. Hence, being honest is about following in God’s footsteps, for He cannot lie. This signifies that God is the one and only unwavering trustworthy existence in our human lives. Since Christ is the Way and our guidance, we need to place our strength and our trust in Him, acknowledging that He knows us best and that we can openly pour our hearts out to Him.

Learning to trust God becomes easy when we see how He has proven Himself to be trustworthy in our lives and the lives of others. Observe how He fulfilled every word of the good He promised through his servant Moses. Subsequently, pay attention when reading the book of Exodus, the book of Joshua, and the other stories in the Bible. Notice how God keeps His promises time and time again and how He rewards those who trusted Him. The record of God’s promises is in His Word for everyone to see. The record of His people’s fulfillment has been well established. In order to open up and trust again, read the Bible regularly. You cannot trust God if you do not know Him.

The Almighty is the only one who is able to change the hearts and minds of His people and to ultimately teach those who seek Him, to openly trust once more. He is our teacher, our hope, and our Saviour who unrelentingly wants the best for us; who loves us for who we are despite our pasts and wrong doings.

 

So God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. (Hebrews 6:18)

 

When you learn to have unwavering trust in God for everything, and to listen to His voice, you will receive provision and peace. He will open your eyes up to see that you have been gifted with, which is an unconditional love like no other. The Spirit of God and His faithfulness guide His people to follow the path to eternal life.

 

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7)

Glorifying God Through Art—Kathrin Honesta

Kathrin Honesta, a 21-year-old student who hails from Jakarta,  felt led by God to pursue Advertising and Graphic Design in “The One Academy” in Malaysia.

A speaker of the Art Sowers held in DUMC on 11 January 2015, Kathrin Honesta shared about her journey with God. The event drew more than 30 people from the Arts College and industry.

Only when she moved to Malaysia, she realized that the Lord was leading her to The One Academy. Despite her father’s initial reluctance, he relented after he heard surprising glowing recommendations of The One Academy from another university.

Even as a young girl, she always knew that she wanted to be a designer, a painter, or any occupation relating to art. Growing up, she would draw according to the comic books she read, manga-style.

Finally, planting herself in The One Academy, she began to meet new friends and moved to a new church in Malaysia, which changed her mind.

“I see things differently. I started to see the purpose in my life. God created me here and planted this talent not for my pleasure but I got to learn to be responsible.

“In my first year, I wanted to glorify God in my art and design but I was not exposed to people who do so. I thought glorifying God is to preach the Word of God until I heard Tau Fei; I heard his lecture; he shared about his passion on the first day of class.”

“I said to myself, ‘Wow! Actually there are people who think that way too.’ Then, I started to think differently, ‘Maybe I can glorify God through my art.’ My major itself doesn’t really require much drawing. But I just do it for my personal work,” said Kathrin.

She realized that there are many designers and artists in this industry. But the difference Christian artists have is that they can be the light of the world.

“Sometimes, I am just sitting with this person, listening to their stories and suddenly there’s this visual that comes. People are walking around but they don’t know where they are going. I was blind but now I see.

“When I really see God, when I really know Him, I start to walk differently than other people. The flower on the top is a mustard seed growing into a flower,” she said.

He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!” (John 9:25)

 

“One day, I was praying. It’s my quiet time with God. And then it struck me how transparent we are with our God. The only one who truly sees me is Him. At the very core, it is God and I. There’s nothing to hide from God. He knows my heart’s motivation,” Kathrin said.

Finding Spiritual Mentors in the M2 Emerging Leaders Mentoring Program

The M2 Emerging Leaders Mentoring Program for Men and for Women was launched on 18th of January at D’ Fung Restaurant in Wisma TA, which drew 40 mentees from 22 churches for mentorship from eight industry players.

On this day as well, 30 mentees from 18 churches celebrated their graduation under the mentorship of six mentors from the past year M2 program.

Held by the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship in Malaysia (FGBMF), they hope to provide a mentorship service targetting young working adults for the local church community. And seeing the success of M2 men last year, M2 women was held for the first time this year with similar framework to M2 men.

Conducted based on the Effective Personal Leadership by Paul J. Meyer, young working adults would learn to deal with their work issues, live out their Christian faith in the marketplace, and be the salt and light in the world.

“It was an eye-opening experience for me to attend the opening dinner event as it helped me to understand deeper the meaning of money and materialism in this changing world by the unchanging love of God,” said Dr Ruth Chan, participant of the M2 program.

Sharing her personal journey of seeking spiritual mothers in her life, Ruth was impressed with her mentor Dr Peggy’s love for the Word of God and service for the thousands of poor children in Malaysia.

Lee Jun King, graduate of the M2 program last year, also shared how God led him to join during his job transition, at an impeccable time of his life. Under the mentorship of Sreedhar Subramaniam, Jun King was impressed with how his down-to-earth mentor led by example in his spiritual discipline and work-life integration.

From the mentors’ side, many personally shared their heart for the young adults. Dr Peggy Wong, a mentor of the M2 program, shared how God impressed in her heart that she is not considered as a good leader until she raise another leader like herself.

And having mentored many young adults, Dr Peggy realized the crux of their problem is in their identity crisis. Many bought the idea of success as the world defined it: firstly, information is power and secondly, success can happen overnight. As a result, these undiscerning information-binging and disillusionment for instant success drove many to dissappointments, addictions, and even contemplating suicide.

What this generation needs, according to Dr Peggy, is to know God, not only know about God. Many young people felt that they do not have time to spend with God. But what they do not realize is that the Bible offers valuable wisdom to make important life decisions, which saves them time from making mistakes. Also, when they know God, they know that their identity only lies in Him, which is unchanged and unperturbed by this world.

Lai Tak Ming, a mentor as well, shared similar heart sentiments with Dr Peggy. Echoing his life calling to develop people, he desires to prepare the young, so that they can eventually take on the baton of leadership. And having life mentors himself, Lai attested to the value of receiving godly counsel.

Henry Eliathamby, another mentor of M2, added, “I have a heart to mentor the young people because when you look into their eyes, you see in your life all the mistakes you made before. And you just don’t want them to go through the same consequences you go through.”

According to Henry, the key problem young people have today is the lack of business role models who are technologically savvy. However, despite the evolving business platforms and methodologies, its foundation remains to be Jesus Christ. Dr Henry also shared that the young people need to have a paradigm shift, whereby wealth does not equate to success. In other words, a disciple in Christ is not marked by how deep one’s pocket is, but how broken and how willing one is to be shaped and used by God. God is more concerned with the stability of our relationship with Him whether richer or poorer, than the sustenance of our wealth. Life is not about what we see but what God is doing in our life.

The banquet dinner ended on a high note after the sharing of the alumni from last year’s M2 program. Interspersed with the intimate sharing between the mentors and mentees, this banquet marks the beginning of a journey that would change the life course of a young working adult for a lifetime.

The churches represented by the participants in this program are Antioch Network Community, Breakthru’ Worship Community Church, Calvary Family Church, City Discipleship Presbyterian Church, DUMC, Full Gospel Tabernacle, Glad Tidings Assembly of God, HIS Church, JCM Agape, Methodist Ampang, New Life Restoration Centre PJ, New Life Restoration Centre Shah Alam, SIBKL, Tabernacle of David, Tcc Rawang, and Triumphant Christian Centre AOG Rawang.

 

 

The M2 men mentors last year who are present in the dinner banquet included Sreedhar Subramaniam, Richard Ling, Dr Wong Hong Meng, and Cheam Tat Inn.

The M2 men mentors this year included Henry Eliathamby, Founder and COO of Tootpay Sdn Bhd; Rick Loh, CEO of NW Solutions (M) Sdn Bhd; Lai Tak Ming, Director, Group Human Resources and Administrator of Infrastructure and Property Group; and Michael Ong, Former Vice President of a business development of a local private university. The M2 woman mentors included Christina Yong, Marketing Director and Dr Peggy Wong, Global Entrepreneur. And finally, the M2 youths mentor is Jason Lee, Wealth Client Proposition Officer for a Bank.

The Witness of the Christian and the Church

Introduction

The words, ‘witness’ and ‘testify’, are both from the Greek word, ‘matur’. The word signifies a person who reports with conviction what he has seen, heard or knows. It also refers to a person who is prepared to die, maintaining that what he has encountered is true. Hence, the word ‘martyr’ in English.

 

  1. Gospel

The Christian is a witness for the gospel of Christ. He is a witness because he has seen Christ in his heart (Matt 5:8). Having heard the gospel and accepted it by faith (Rom 10:17), the Christian knows GOD in a relationship through prayer, His word and in the fellowship of the church, the body of Christ (1 Cor 12:27).

The gospel is the good news. This is about the death of Christ on the cross and His resurrection from the dead. This is victory over the power of death and sin, to save man (John 5:24; Acts 4:12; Rom 5:1 & 2; 1 Cor 15:3-7; 2 Cor 5:17-21). The starting point of the gospel is not what we think of GOD but what GOD thinks of us. It is the love of GOD that must be passed on in the gospel message (John 3:16-17).

The Christian and the church exist for one purpose: to be a witness so that many would be added to Christ’s Kingdom daily. This is the reason why it receives its power from on high (Acts 1:8; 2:47). It needs to be released to the world instead of having a ‘siege’ mindset that could hold it back.

 

  1. The Similitudes

Christ said that the Christian is the salt of the earth; the light of the world; and a city on a hill (Matt 5:13-16).

As the salt of the earth, the Christian has to pass on the true flavour of man’s existence to the unsaved. This is Christ (John 14:6).

Being the light of the world, the Christian must reveal that salvation is found in Christ alone (Acts 4:12).

The Christian, a city on a hill, is to be visible as a refuge, to the unsaved. A city on a hill can be seen far and wide by a distant traveller, in search of refreshment and rest from the scorching desert of the Mediterranean. It is in an elevated position, symbolising the stature for all to approach. 

 

  1. Fruitfulness

Man was to be fruitful from day one (Gen 1:22).He is still to be used by GOD to multiply the Kingdom. The great commission (Matt 28:18-20; Acts 1:8) is operative for nearly 2000 years. It is NOT the great option. It certainly is great however, as it is a commission from the LORD. We are commissioned into His army (2 Tim 2:4; Eph 6:11-18).

A Christian and the church are not expected to isolate themselves but instead, to go out (Matthew 16:18) and build the kingdom (Acts 1:8). A Christian does not stop at being saved, keeping to himself. A church is not an exclusive club.  John Wesley (1703-91) wrote, “I look upon all the world as my parish….” Our parish starts in our own house and extends to the neighbourhood. It includes our places of work and anywhere that we gather with friends and associates. Train stops or airplane passenger seats are also places where we could advance the gospel when the occasion presents itself.

The Christian must not be ashamed of the gospel (Rom 1:16).He has the treasure which he should joyfully pass on (Matt 13:44; 2 Cor 4:5-7).

Christ made it clear that those of us who confess Him before men would be acknowledged before the Father by Him (Matt 10:32-33).

 

  1. Spiritual Diligence

The Christian must always be ready to give an account of the gospel (1 Pet 3:15). A Christian, if not fully committed to Christ, would not make an effective witness. It is not the level of knowledge, but the relationship with Christ that determines if a believer can be used by GOD as His witness.

St Peter reminds us to sanctify ourselves in the Lord for the unexpected occasion when sharing the gospel may be required. We therefore pray on this and for the person/s to whom the sharing is to be presented to.

 

  1. Work of the Holy Spirit

The Christian should not engage in a shouting match when sharing the gospel. It is the Holy Spirit who convicts the world of sin, righteousness and judgement (Jn 16:7-11; 13-15).

The Christian must prepare his work in the Holy Spirit before he shares the gospel. He should not plunge into it. Prayer is his critical resource. But he should be humble and know that if a soul is saved, it is GOD’s work.

By the same token, the Christian must not be cheated by the devil’s discouragement if the results of his witness are not immediately visible. George Muller (1805-98) prayed for over 50 years for the conversion of a particular person. Mueller believed that GOD would save that person even whilst on his (Muller’s) deathbed. A year after Muller’s death, this person was saved.

 

  1. Numbers

People are to be viewed as persons and not target numbers. King David got caught by a numbers game when he yielded to the temptation to count his army. This was to him evidence of what he considered to be his own strength (1 Ch 21:1, 7 & 8).

David Livingstone (1813-73), a missionary to Africa, and Adoniram Judson (1788-1850), a missionary to Myanmar, had only one convert each. What was important was that others were inspired by the Holy Spirit to follow on their trail. Do not underestimate the spiritual worth of one soul saved (Luke 15:10).

Sowing the gospel may be just as important as reaping the results of that sowing.

 

  1. The Example of Christ

Never condemn a person. Christ dealt with sinners. But He never condemned them (John 8:11). He highlighted their sin and told them to end it. In Christ’s plan, it is man who condemns himself (Matt 5:29-30, 7:19; Mark 9:43; John 3:17-18, 4:7-26, 15:6).

Judgement day is another time and place to come. But for now, the Christian’s role is to confess sin, repent, proceed to be sanctified and to witness. That is the current agenda.

Christ shows that conversation rather than confrontation was the approach to be used in passing on the gospel. People are to be cultivated with the gospel rather than condemned for their poor spiritual state. We are fishers of men (Matt 4:19); not harpooners of men. We focus on the love of Christ to be enjoyed.

 

  1. The Lessons from St Paul.

Never run down another religion, insulting anyone. Instead, use it as a starting point. In Acts 17:22-34, St Paul observed that the Greeks in Athens worshipped a nameless idol. He did not condemn them or their religion for this: he openly acknowledged their religious fervour. In verse 28, Paul spoke to them of the Providence of GOD and quoted a line from Greek literature in support of this.

Paul was not compromising the gospel. He was not trying to pass off the gospel as another faith.  He was using their religious commitment and attachments as his launch pad. By the time he had completed his preaching, he was well-ahead of the starting point and into the full gospel. A simple understanding of the tenets of other faiths or the issues confronting the unsaved may assist us in this way.

When Paul went into a city it was his custom to go into the Jewish synagogue (prayer house) to explain the gospel from the Old Testament (Acts 17:2; 18:4).He used, as his launch pad, what they revered as sacred: their Old Testament. He did not have to invalidate the Old Testament but to use it as the foundation of the gospel.

 

  1. Prayer

Any effort or programme for the Kingdom of GOD needs what John Wesley terms ‘fervent prayer’. Prayer is not a mechanical procedure from a distance but a relationship in unison with Christ. This is absolutely critical.

Conviction is the LORD’s work, not ours. Hence, we consecrate our submissions to the LORD in prayer. Ours is to pass on the treasure. If the prospect has doubts, we ask him/her to pray, preferably with us taking the lead. Tell the person that GOD responds to sincere hearts (Jer 29:12-13).

 

Conclusion

We are never without Christ and the Holy Spirit in our sharing of the gospel (Jer 20:11; Matt 28:20; Luke 12:11-12; John 14:26; 1 John 2:27).GOD does HIS work through us as HIS vessels. That is His assurance to us.

Living in the Favour of God: Pastor Neil Smith, Planetshakers Awakening Conference 2015

The Planetshakers’ annual visit to Malaysia is one of the eagerly-awaited highlights of the year for many Christians. For three nights and two days, their rallies and workshops are packed to the brim and the lines entering the auditorium take up almost the whole outer corridor.

Besides the rallies themselves, the Planetshakers are also taking up roles as connectors in the field of Christian Media and Evangelism. In one of the workshops conducted on the 24th of January this year, Pastor Neil Smith discussed about living in the favour of God.

 

Living In a Room Called Favour

Pastor Neil shared that in order to be in the favour in God, we must learn how to place ourselves daily in a room filled with God’s presence. And in order to do that, we need to cultivate a radical faith and expectation as part of our routine.

‘I am going to talk to you about living in the room called Favour,’ Pastor Smith shared. ‘You see, we need to understand that God has favoured us; that’s a scripture that has been coming to us over and over again. The truth is, if we’re going to be leaders in the Church, if we’re going to be people who help in ministries and be part of things that happen in the Church’s life, then we need to have on us something that people desire.

‘We need to be people who are so full of faith, so full of confidence, that often, when people step into a church, we are the first ‘Jesus’ they see. They see the presence of Jesus through you and that becomes their expression of “Do I want this Jesus or don’t I?” So the truth is that we need to understand that we are people who are favoured by the Lord but we continue to live in that favour every day of our lives. I want to declare over your lives that favour is going to rule over them in 2015.’

 

The Favour of the Lord Brings Power and Authority     

One of the things that are related to living in the favour of the Lord is dominion, also known as power and authority (Ephesians 1:18-23).

‘If we want to understand living in the favour of God, we need to understand what it is to walk in dominion. Not everyone understands what dominion means but it basically signifies the right to govern or rule. We as the Church are supposed to walk in authority; we are supposed to recognize that God has given us a dominion authority, whether in business, education, or whatever it may be. We need to walk in the sense of dominion authority; “God has given me the right to be the head and not the tail, and through His power, I will overcome and fulfill what God has purposed me to do”,’ Pastor Neil imparted.

 

The Meaning of Dominion in the Lives of Christians

For Christians, dominion has a different meaning from that of the world. ‘We don’t dominate people, we dominate atmospheres. Dominance over individuals is dictatorship or bullying. We are called to be people who carry dominion, not necessarily over people, but over realms, over the spiritual atmosphere, no matter where God has placed us,’ Pastor Neil conveyed.

He shared that Luke 8:49-56 has much to show us about the nature of faith and its role in the exercise of dominion. In the passage, we read about Jesus’ healing of Jairus’ daughter. There are three things to take note; 1.) There were only a few people in the room 2.) most of the people, including some of the disciples, did not get to go into the room 3.) the specific people Jesus chose to go into the room.

 

What the Passage Shows Us about Being in the Room Called Favour

When we hear about the revivals that are taking place all over the world, how often do we wish that we did not just get to hear about them but also be a part of them?’ Pastor Neil encouraged. ‘God has prepared a room of influence and favour for each one of us, and we need to change our perspectives and not focus on the circumstances, as the wailers in this passage do, but rather on how to be solutions. How do we ensure that we are in the room that God has prepared for us?’

Among the people that were left out were some of the disciples; they missed the opportunity. These disciples haven’t caught what Jesus was doing. Pastor Neil communicated that Christianity is primarily about catching, and that a huge part of ministry need to be focused on teaching believers how to catch the heart of Jesus and be part of what He is doing. ‘Christianity is more than head knowledge, it is about interconnection; our relationship with God must reach deep down and catch our hearts.’

Three disciples – James, John, and Peter – were chosen by Jesus to be in the room with Him, and we read in many other passages that these three were notable for their faith and close relationship to Jesus. Jesus wanted them in the room for their faith and authority in changing the spiritual atmosphere.

 

How Do We Ensure We Are in the Room?

Pastor Neil imparted that there are three keys in ensuring that we are in the room of favour and catch on to the movement of God:

  1. Create and carry the atmosphere: Are we focusing on the circumstances or are we creating and carrying the spiritual atmosphere with authority?
  2. Declare the enemy is defeated: Be radical in our praises to God. Praise has the power to change atmospheres.
  3. Challenge and change our thinking: Our thinking has a tendency to be shaped by the atmosphere and culture of the place we are surrounded with. In order to place ourselves in the room of favour, we need to change the culture by bringing in the supernatural atmosphere of God into our surroundings.

Persevere and Believe that Art can Glorify God—Su Jun Han

On 11th of January 2015, Su Jun Han, speaker of Art Sowers Talk shared with more than 30 people from the Art College and industry in DUMC about how he glorified God through his motion graphics project.

Jun Han graduated from The One Academy shared how God prompted him to do his final motion graphics project based on the book of Genesis.

“But the challenge is my friend is a non-believer. So, I told him, ‘the idea is very simple: I do the light and spiritual part and you do the darkness and evil part.’ To my surprise, he thinks it’s very cool because he likes dark and gothic stuffs,” said Jun Han.

As the President of Christian Fellowship (CF) in college, he struggled in managing his time between his school projects and leading the CF.

“Sometimes, after my class I have to share in CF. I do not have time to prepare my note. So, I have to prepare during my class. It was awkward for me but I did it anyway,” said Jun Han with a wide smile across his face.

Although his lecturers were skeptical of his project, yet Jun Han and his partner persevered on until completion.

“I was really excited. We spent many hours on this project and that ‘few seconds’ of presentation was like a golden moment in my life. After I presented, I heard applause from my classmates. Some of them shouted, ‘Amen!’” said Jun Han.

Jun Han thought he has completed the project but God has a greater plan! Jun Han continued to submit his video to The One Academy Student Creative Award Competition. He and his friend won Gold Award in motion graphic category. 

“I saw God’s amazing power in this entire process. In my high school, I never win any award and trophy. I never expect my first award would come with such an amazing and powerful testimony. I have one project before this in college and I got a bad result.

“My lecturer told me that I would fail this subject because the content had too much about God. I got scared and I wanted to give up on doing art with biblical values. But my Christian friends reminded me the importance of using art to glorified God,” said Jun Han.

“It’s about faith, keep trusting God. There will be failures along the way but God is faithful,” said Jun Han.

His Christian Fellowship advisor Lew Tau Fei added at the end of his sharing, “Jun Han is a man of faith. He perseveres on and believes that his art must glorify God despite his lecturers’ unfavorable comments.

“But when the motion graphics won the Gold award, the lecturers complimented Jun Han’s amazing work. He shared about Christ even in unfavorable situations.”

You are Clothed with the Favor from God—Pr Andy Harrison of Planetshakers

On 23rd of January, Pr Andy Harrison of Planetshakers shared a word of God in the Planetshakers Awakening conference in DUMC. He shared that the Word carries a potent power that projects our potential into reality. What does that mean?

 

When the angels met Gideon on the threshing floor, they addressed Gideon as the mighty warrior, a total contradiction of how Gideon saw himself! (Judges 6:15)

But like Gideon, some of us may think we are not enough in accomplishing God’s Will for us. Yet, God sees in us all the vested potential we have in us, waiting to be birthed out. The question is whether we are ready to catch this prophetic anointing from the Lord. 

What separates us from the age of Gideon (or the Old Testament) is how Christ has redeemed our relationship with God through His blood. Hence, in the New Testament, we have the privilege to be appointed as the children of God.

 

And we are favored as His children, not because of our righteousness, our good deeds or our religious observations, but because of God’s unconditional love. (John 3:16)

 

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)

 

This heart of God the Father for us can be represented by the heart of Jacob for his son Joseph.

Since birth, Jacob has set Joseph apart and loved him more than his brothers. At one point, he declared his favor upon Joseph when he made Joseph wear a multi-colored coat. And while Joseph evoked favor from his father, he evoked disfavor from his brothers, so much so they sold him into slavery out of jealousy.

Sometimes, God’s favor in our lives would also evoke disfavor or persecutions from the people around us. Pr Andy shared how a particular classmate would often attempt to humiliate him by making him answer difficult social issues raised by his teacher in class. Little did his friend know, his classmate was giving Pr Andy a platform to share about the gospel.

Hence, like Joseph, the favor God has bestowed on us may evoke dislike, hatred, and persecutions in our life. But take heart, the reason for this disfavor is because you may have unknowingly attracted the attention of people who could not comprehend the favor you are enjoying.

Likewise, we are clothed in Jesus Christ as well and the favor of our God as well, as children of God. (Romans 13:14)

 

Also, have you ever wondered why Jacob chose to give Joseph a coat? Jacob could have given him other things such as a ring, money or camels. Pr Andy shared that for Joseph to wear a coat, he is literally wearing the favor, love, and blessing of his father. Wearing the coat was an apparent indicator and declaration of Jacob’s favor upon him. Wherever Joseph goes, Jacob’s favor covers him. Likewise, as the children of God, God’s favor follows us everywhere we go.

Lastly, we need to remember that we owe our enjoyment of God’s favor to the invitation of someone else. The reason God bestowed favor on us is to ultimately bring people to Him, that they too can enjoy the favor of God.

 

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. (1 Pet 2:9)

 

Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the flesh. (Romans 13:14)

Sometimes, we question if God’s favor has left us when we go through trials and tribulations. But like smelly fertilizers and compose, these trials and tribulations are necessary to help us grow our roots deep into God. And when we are strongly rooted in Him, and we die to our desires, that is when the seed would shoot out a tender plant that grows into a tree. This tree would produce other seeds. And these seeds would also go through the same process. As this process continues, the Kingdom God advances.

He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. The True Worth of a Man Is When He Comes To Know Christ: Marcus Liew

From the top of the financial world, to the lowest depths of any experience a man can go through, and back through redemption with a miraculous, awe-inspiring and loving God, Marcus Liew has experienced it all, and recently he shared his story with Christianity Malaysia.

Marcus’ story started ten years ago, during a time of financial crisis in his life, ‘Out of good intention, and lack of knowledge, a relative of mine introduced me to a man in a temple. I gave him some money to help me and shortly thereafter, my cash flow improved miraculously.’

‘That was how I got involved with temple worship, and I started to donate money to the temple, sometimes up to hundreds of thousands to pay for temple building. Naturally, in time they made me a chairman of this temple and I was actually one of the youngest temple chairmen in the nation. I used to consult the man I knew in the temple for everything, even for advice in my business. With his consent, I entered into a new business partnership.’

Initially, life was good for Marcus and he even made as much as RM150,000 per month.

‘Looking back, even the devil has his power,’ Marcus shared. ‘I was supposedly the king of my world and living the dream of my life. I smoked up to four packets of cigarettes a day. I entertained every night and I drank to the extent that I bled almost daily. However, when my business started to collapse, the people I thought could help me all left me.’

About a year ago, Marcus was called by the National Bank of Malaysia. At first, it seemed they just wanted to get some statements from him, but Marcus found himself unexpectedly charged for two business offences. Not having the RM600,000 to post bail, he soon found himself in jail. ‘I saw things no one should have to see. The way the inmates were treated; it was inhumane. The prisoners had no dignity and purpose left in life. In my life as well, it was the lowest moment that I have ever experienced,’ he related.

While his parents borrowed enough money to post bail, Marcus went into depression. All his friends left him, and in those days, he thought that he no longer had a future. It was shameless for a man and he had no self-worth if he could not support his family, but everything had been stripped away from him. He was bankrupt and everything that money had bought for him was gone. The only light left in his life in those days was his wife and family.

‘I remember I was sitting alone with my thoughts one day when my wife told me that no matter what happened, the family has to stay together. She suggested that I visited her church pastor, but I had my pride even then. The only response I gave was “I am a chairman of a temple.” I remembered that in the past some Christians had spoken to me about God’s judgment on sinners and people who did not know Him. Looking back, I realized that they may have good intentions but that was a major stumbling block for me at that time. But my wife is a smart woman.’

‘She suggested that I meet a pastor who had been a university friend of mine. I did not object but I gave him the same response that I gave to my wife. He commented that I was a tough nut, but he also said that though I did not choose to accept Jesus, it did not mean that He would not help me.’ The pastor connected Marcus to two members of his church – Mr Ling Teck John and Mr Liew Ah Onn.

Mr Ling is a lawyer and gave Marcus some helpful advice. Mr Liew also shared about his personal testimony, and Marcus related that after hearing about Liew’s experience, his own problem seemed so small. ‘This brother had went through so much, and I was initially puzzled why he would want to help a wreck like me, especially when he did not really know me that well at that time. He and his wife were so supportive and I owe so much to them.’        

Later, Marcus’ wife shared with him the story about Jesus and the prostitute. When everyone condemned and wanted to stone her, Jesus showed her love by forgiving her, ‘”You are like that woman in the Bible. When everyone shied away from you and wanted to stone you, brother Liew and family showed you love.”’

One day, brother Liew asked Marcus if he would like to accept Jesus as his Lord and Saviour. This time, Marcus did not let his ego take control of his life. ‘I simply asked what it took to accept Christ as my Savior. Brother Liew took 45 minutes to explain and then led me to Christ. It was that simple but I felt a huge burden lift off my shoulders and I broke down. I still had some snags regarding my position as temple chairman but God took care even of that. One day they simply called me up and told me that I had been fired from the position, and I just gave thanks to God.’   

‘This was a real paradigm shift in my experience,’ Marcus shared. ‘Previously, all my life, I had thought that a man owes everything in his self-worth to himself. “If you want people to look up to you, you climb the social ladder and become a rich and successful man. If you have power, people will look up to you”. Even my religious outlook used to be that way; the more you are able to donate, the more the gods will look kindly on you.’

Marcus’ experiences could have easily broken him but he shared that, looking back, he realized that God had been there even at his lowest depths. ‘Even then, God was already working to redeem me. Now all that matters to me is that more people will come to know and love this awe-inspiring God who is large enough to love us first, even when we refused to recognize Him.’

Today, Marcus has quit smoking, drinking, and swearing. He no longer entertains late into the night, and his wife can confirm that he has been a responsible father and head of the family. The Lord has blessed his business and 90% of his staff today is Christian. The Lord has even employed him to lead more than 16 people to Christ.  

‘In my past, I had never knew this amazing God who could accept and love us so much that He would reach down to a broken man. Only now do I realize the impact and magnitude of what He did for my sake even 2000 years’ ago. It took the testimonies, love, and support of Christians to bring this about but I am so grateful to God and these people that He had brought into my life.

 ‘Today, I tell people of my experience so that they could learn from it. I advise them not to be stubborn or allow their ego to take charge. I only wish I can counsel and share with more people about the gift of salvation and perfect love of Jesus which is available for all,’ he shared.

The day I talked to Marcus I could see that this guy was a strong, confident man, a man who knew his true worth, and that that true worth can only come through the way God sees you.

The Word This Week – AS A MAN THINKETH IN HIS HEART SO IS HE (PROVERBS 23:7)

Your circumstances do not defeat you but your spiritual attitude towards your circumstances can defeat you. Everybody will face circumstances in life. God never promised us a problem-free life.

A mould can become a mountain if you focus on it for too long.

Here is what you need to understand. Your victory or defeat in your life is not based on your circumstances! It’s not based on the people you deal with! Neither is it based on the system out there! Blaming circumstances will not make you successful or unsuccessful. Here is a key: God always gives us a seed for success but it incubates in YOUR MIND AND HEART.

If you fail in your MIND you will be defeated in your LIFE! Your problem is not circumstances out there! Your problem isn’t bad luck! Your problem is not even the devil! Your problem is a THINKING PROBLEM!

In the Gospel of John 5, a certain man was there who had an infirmity lying in his bed for 38 years at the pool of Bethesda. Can you imagine 38 years he has been lying there and giving excuses! When Jesus saw him he asked him a simple question; “Do you want to be healed?” Instead of replying a simple “yes”, he began to blame his circumstances. He began to blame people. He was virtually leveraging “a pity party situation”. Jesus overruled all his excuses and commanded him to take up his bed and walk and immediately he was made well.

Your problem is renewing of your mind!! (CHANGING OF YOUR MINDSET)

You know what? Have you ever given a thought that your life today is the creation of all your thoughts in all your yesterdays? What you are today is A PRODUCT OF A SEED that you conceived in your mind yesterday and that seed has obviously produced after its own kind. BECAUSE, God’s law says, every “SEED” WILL produce after its own kind (Gen1)

What happens in you will determine your outcome. Your success or failure is an inside job (Heart & Mind). You don’t have to change the circumstances in order to change the outcome of your life. Some people think if “I can change everything and everybody out there, only then I will be successful in life”. They fail to realize that even if they succeeded in changing everything out there, they will still not be successful because success IS NOT OUT THERE!  But you know what?  If you ever want to succeed IN YOUR LIFE, you need to do a lot of CHANGING IN YOUR MIND AND HEART.

Have you forgotten that you are created in the image of God? You are a creative force of God. You can take charge of your life by taking charge of your thinking. You can be TRANSFORMED by the RENEWING OF YOUR MIND.

(Gal. 5:1) What is it that God has already delivered you from? What is it that God has already said “it’s over”? And “it’s finished!” He has set you free from the immoral things you did while you were under bondage and you go back to it? Stop going back!(2Peter 2:20) Listen!  It’s not what you go to in life that messes you up! It’s what you go back to that will kill you! Whatever you don’t want in your future get it out in your present! “You become whatever you behold”.

When you change the way you think about your problem, you TRANSFORM YOUR PROBLEM! You see all these events whether positive or negative happens outside you. It cannot impact or affect you unless you make a WILLING CHOICE to allow it to COME INSIDE YOU and affect you emotionally. What you believe determines what you become. “You think what you think because you believe what you believe”. I don’t know’ if you can see that a lie can become a powerful truth IF YOU BELIEVED IT TO BE TRUE!

One of the saddest and greatest tragedies in human beings is a mindset problem.

THERE ARE ONLY 2 mind sets ONE IS A WORLDLY MINDSET AND THE OTHER IS A SPIRITUAL MINDSET.

 

THE WORLDLY MINSET

If you don’t get Into Gods word, the world will get into you. The world will seduce you into a mindset of thinking that it’s o.k to flow with it. A thinking pattern that is not in line with God’s word.  You either grow into the image of God or you grow into the image of the world.

Have you ever realized that most of us have been indoctrinated and impacted with a mindset of our immediate environment? Therefore we have been made to think that that is the best mind-set.

Your belief system can be easily affected and influenced because our human mind is so fragile that we are so vulnerable to human influence than to God’s influence. No wonder the world has been drawn away to extreme secularistic ideology today.

 

THE SPIRITUAL MINDSET IS A MINDSET OF A BORN-AGAIN CHRISTIAN renewed constantly by the word of God (Rom.12:2).That is why we have the Word of God as our guideline and foundation to refer back to and that  forms the basis of our foundation and truth.

How many of you will agree with me anything that is not supported by the word of God. Anything that defeats the word of a God. Anything that has no basis in the word of God is absolutely not the truth.

Please understand; a human clever idea, no matter how rational or logical it may sound and look, it’s absolutely not A God Idea.

 As Christians we need to understand how important a daily diet of God’s word is to each one of us. Because this will either keep you plucked in to God or it will separate you from God. It’s the word that sanctifies us and keeps us from being polluted from the way of the world. So as a Christian if you don’t have time to read and understand what the word says then you are not going be transformed. You will remain where you are for the rest of your life.

A Dose of Wonder

Newborns can bless several generations.

During the months leading up to the birth of our first grandchild, my wife, Teri, and I received a lot of knowing winks and smiles from friends who were already grandparents.

“You’re gonna love it,” they insisted without exception. We were indeed awed and curious as we felt this new family member gently rolling within her mother’s expanding belly. When the moment of birth arrived, all four grandparents leaned against the door of the delivery room, listening intently for the first cry. When it came, we couldn’t contain our joy and tears.

Neither Teri nor I recalled this much awe and wonder with our own two kids. Most of my memories of our firstborn’s arrival involve feeling sleep-deprived, reluctant about the 24/7 responsibilities, worried about Teri’s recovery and more annoyed than I care to admit whenever that vaguely accusatory newborn cry wouldn’t subside right away. My mom, however, bestowed generous doses of awe and wonder on her grandchildren and helped us re-orient our attitudes on a regular basis.

When we first learned we would become grandparents, we wasted no time setting up a nursery in our home. But during her first several visits with us, our granddaughter spent little time there because all we wanted to do was hold her. We would gaze at her tiny features, play with her toes, let her fingers grasp one of ours, marvel at the miniature nails, cradle her head, grin at her unruly storm of dark hair and wait for one of those smiles that would illuminate the room.

I know it doesn’t always work this way, but I believe grandparents are intended to be the agents of an important message to young parents who may be feeling more than a little overwhelmed: This little person you have brought into the world is precious beyond measure. By the way, you don’t have to be a grandma or grandpa to do this. Interested relatives and friends can also embrace the role of providing awe and wonder, especially where and when it may be in short supply.

Without the relentless duties of early parenthood, relatives can put errands and chores on hold while they spend time with new children, knowing their home will return to quiet once again.

Grandparents may reflect on their parenting years and wonder whether they might have put a little more emphasis on enjoying the early years instead of worrying so much about messy rooms or crayon marks on the walls. With grandchildren they have that opportunity, the chance to observe and savor moments that will pass quickly.

It is an incredible gift for grown children to see their offspring through the eyes of a love-struck grandparent or relative. When Grandma’s face lights up the instant Ella toddles through the front door, it helps Mommy remember why she became a mother in the first place. When Grandpa values playing with Joshua more than watching a football game, it helps Dad renew his commitment to be a good father. When grandparents regard little ones with awe and wonder, they bless two generations at once.

Leaving a Legacy through Building Culture—Pr Andy Harrison from Planetshakers

By building a culture, we can leave a legacy, which sustains God’s movement beyond our presence and existence.

And on 23rd of January, Pr Andy Harrison of Planetshakers shared in the Planetshakers Awakening conference at DUMC about the power of culture. 

To start a culture, we need to be the culture first because a culture developed always reflects who you are. Planetshakers is passionate and prophetic today because it reflects the very person of Russell Evans, Senior Pastor of Planetshakers City Church in Australia.

Even the Bible points out the different cultures Saul and David developed from their character, basically from who they are.

During battle with the Philistines, the whole army under Saul had no sword or spear in their hands except for Saul and his son Jonathan. (1 Sam 13) Saul developed a culture of fear and disempowerment amongst his soldiers.

How about David? Although David was banished from the presence of Saul, mighty men from different tribes even Saul’s relatives came to join him. They were skillful warriors armed with bows and able to sling stones right-handed and left handed, eventually becoming valiant commanders for David. (1 Chro 12) David, a man after God’s heart, had developed a Kingdom-centered culture, which empowers instead of disempowers his people.

And as a culture developer, we are called to influence and not to be influenced by the culture around us. With a campus ministry of 700 students and 140 leaders, Pr Andy stressed that a big and strong Kingdom culture in Planetshakers is important to influence a newcomer entering with preexisting cultures, and not the other way round.

For example, he shared how the culture of Planetshakers was so powerful when he joined at 14 years old. Immediately, he wanted to wholeheartedly serve the ministry like everyone else, because that was the culture Pr Rudy Nikkerud created. Developing a culture is not wanting to make a name for oneself or one’s ministry, but to perpetuate and expand Kingdom-centered cultures.

Lastly, not only are we called to be culture developers; we are also called to be culture carriers. The Bible calls us ambassadors. This means that we are not meant to represent the culture of our country or our race, but we are meant to represent the culture of our home in Heaven. As soon as anyone approaches us, they will experience the culture of our Father in Heaven. 

Pr Andy shared that he knows that Planetshakers will be challenged this year to contain what God is about to do. But is he developing the culture to contain God’s work?

How do you see your wounds? — Pastor Rudy Nikkerud of Planetshakers

“Repeat after me, ‘window wounds,’” says Pastor Rudy Nikkerud, pastor of Planetshakers in the Planetshakers Awakening Conference 2015 held at DUMC on the 23 January, 2015.

He continued sharing about window wounds after reading the Bible Scripture of John chapter 20, which relates to Thomas touching Jesus’ wound. Pastor Rudy shared that the fulfillment in our life ultimately comes from our journey with God, and we will not be able to really live out an incredible and great life without God.

“Do you believe that you have a calling in your life?” he asked. Pr Rudy started to share about his personal journey of faith, where he knew about God’s calling for his life since he was young. Worshiping God in the Planetshakers conference back then, he could not help but ponder about the off-stage relationship of the worship team with God. And that led him to have a greater hunger and desire for Him!

Since then, he began to work hard, excited for the calling in his life. He started to imitate his youth leaders. However, his youth leader had an affair at one point in life, which caused him to have a wound in his heart. His learning model has failed him.

He continued saying that when one is too focus on the destination, we will only see all the problems and situations. But when we focus on the One who gives us the destination, which is God, all we will see throughout our problems and situations is just God.

Pastor Rudy shared a story of a young boy who got a brand new camera for his birthday present. Excited, the boy tried the camera out by snapping pictures all over the place. One day, he saw an eagle soaring in the sky. So, he started to snap pictures of it. Suddenly, he saw the eagle diving down with its wings kept at the side of its body. The eagle seemed to hit the ground. Yet, after he bit something from the ground, it started flying high up to the sky again. The boy was amazed by the eagle. So, he continued to observe and took pictures of it. But to his dismay, he noticed that the eagle was falling down in split seconds and hit the ground! Running to check the eagle, he realized it was dead. The eagle refused to let go of the things it was holding in its mouth. It was the struggle for the small things in its mouth that caused its death.

And sometimes, Pastor Rudy shared that we are just like the eagle. We choose to hold on to certain things in our life, which actually cripple us from moving forward to fulfill our calling. In other words, if we decide to hold to our wounds, we will be just like the eagle.

There are times we choose to hold on to the wounds in our life that are caused by others. But we can choose to see these wounds as wounds that cripple us or we can see these wounds as windows, which lead us to God and more opportunities.

International Christian Mission (ICM) Malaysia Celebrates God’s Faithfulness in Thanksgiving Celebration

The International Christian Mission (ICM) Malaysia is no stranger to most churches and Christians in Malaysia. ICM has been a cornerstone for the mission field for years. For a long time, they have been working closely with pastors and church members in the harvest field, extending God’s Kingdom across many nations, even as far as Africa, halfway across the world.

International Christian Mission (ICM) celebrated their annual thanksgiving to God recently.

 

Headed by Brother Edwin Marsden, the organization facilitates and leads mission trips and events throughout the region as well as the year, January to December. Besides going on mission trips themselves, the members of ICM operate as instructors for future missionaries. For others, being a part of the ICM Malaysia ministry mean being given opportunities of taking up roles on short-term missions, sponsoring a pastor or an ICM Malaysia student, or praying for the workers in the harvest field as well as the lost.     

Recently, ICM celebrated the faithfulness of God and the Holy Spirit in a thanksgiving celebration. The celebration opened with a Spirit-filled time of worship, proclaiming God’s faithfulness and control over even the most difficult of challenges. Much prayer was made for the healing of the country, before STM Coordinator brother David Christopher and ICM President Edwin Marsden shared about the work ICM Malaysia had completed throughout 2014.

Many of the mission trips aided by ICM Malaysia made it possible for people living in the most remote areas to hear about the Gospel for the first time. Great testimonies were shared about God’s work not just on the home soil but even as far afield as Nepal and the Congo.

ICM training was conducted in Gorkha and Dhangadi, Nepal. In the Congo, a majority of children in the pygmies’ school set up at the Biane campsite successfully completed their classes. Out of 129 registered for the year, 103 went up to the end of the school year. 87 passed their classes. Additionally, 13 adults completed their literacy and evangelism class.  

Nearer to home, in Sumatra, a former witch doctor came to know Christ and now shares about Him on television. In the Phillipines, large contingents of police officers from the ranks of Police Inspector to Police Superintendant came to know the Lord in a personal relationship and participated in Leadership seminars for the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Brother Edwin Marsden shared a simple heart-felt message about the Holy Spirit as well as the Christian’s role in missions work. He shared that the work that had been achieved in multiple countries throughout the year was done not by powerful or glamorous people; they were ordinary people doing the extraordinary.

‘In John 17:4, Jesus said “Father, I have finished the work that you have given me to do”. Jesus recognized that He was born on Earth for a purpose and that He had come to finish the work that had been set for Him by the Father. And in verse 6, He said, “I have made you known to those who you have given me.” He knew exactly His role and what He had to do. In verse 18, He said, ”Just as you sent me into the world, I am sending them into the world.”

‘Jesus has finished His work and He appointed His disciples to continue the work. But He did not just past the baton to them, He sent them the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit worked with Jesus throughout His lifetime. The Holy Spirit came upon Mary and Jesus was born. The Holy Spirit was there when Jesus was baptized and when He was in the wilderness. He was there in Jesus’ ministry (Acts 10:38). And today that same Holy Spirit that worked with Jesus is here to work with us,’ brother Marsden encouraged.

Brother Marsden shared that when ICM started out, none of them had any official training beyond simple obedience and faith in God; they were businessmen, and as the ministry grew larger than them, they had to trust the Holy Spirit’s providence. It is recognizing who they are working for and coming to know the Holy Spirit on a daily level, being led and guided by Him that has sustained the ministry. Time and time again, the Holy Spirit has shown His faithfulness.

‘The Holy Spirit is not some form of power. He is not some kind of energy or just someone who’s out there. He is the one holding power above all other power in this world and He is in us. Without Him, we cannot do anything. So we need to know the person of the Holy Spirit and work together with the Spirit,’ he conveyed.

A pot-luck style dinner was provided, where you could see the closeness of the bond between the members, in fellowship and contributions towards the pot-luck, before the celebration closed with many other first-hand testimonies from missionaries.
